PNR's and other references

Trying to help one of my friends out overseas...

Is in South America and came on e-ticket from Santiago, and changed it, however original PNR is still intact online and has the old flight details.

Got given a paper ticket to come home, hand written can you believe? Like the ones that we would get with red ink all over and carbon copies.

Anyway has a 6 digit alphanumeric, but when I enter it in to checkmytrip or Qantas, it says...

Qantas
"Last name entered is not registered with this booking reference.(#8132)"

It's a QF flight operated by LAN, that's all I know .... have not seen the ticket since it's in South America.

Any pointers anyone? Don't really understand how PNRs and internal references (not sure what they are called) interlink??

It also works with ticket numbers. However it is for e-tickets so it MAY not work.

The passenger last name must match the one on the reservation
