I think I would miss the hotel status and lounge access with plat charge. I've managed to get a free night with Accor (just got in before they dumped that benefit), a free weekend's car rental, plus you get $300 travel credit, so the cost of the plat is really only $900...I've bought it hook line and sinker!

but I get your point, I didn't realise you can keep the reserve without the plat charge...and I do like the look of the Explorer card...

Is the reserve worth the $400 annual fee unless you're flying to NZ with your 'free' flight? If you're spending heaps on eating out, maybe but I agree with you 1.5 FF/$ on all spending is more valuable.

Well I do get a lot of points this way and its more than just eating out... It is coffee in the morning, work lunches and breakfast of the weekends. Then there's dinners etc which can add up if you pay for the group & then get the money back.

You keep the flight. I have had booked flights with cancelled Reserve and Edge Cards before.

I am about to cancel 2 Amex Velocity Cards ( I plus wife) and just need to redeem the flights first. I will then apply for 2 Explorers

No, you will not get any fee refund if have redeemed your complimentary flight.

That does seem reasonable given that the flight cost is very likely more than the annual fee.

I called today to understand my options and was quoted $395 for the Reserve as it's annual fee.

Useless CS person who had to keep checking things that were pretty straight forward but I believe the fee quoted.

I'm thinking the Reserve and the Explorer would work nicely together to cover almost all of my spend going forward...

Wouldn't the Edge and Explorer be a better combo? Unless you spend more in restaurants and on travel than you do in supermarkets and petrol stations.

Bingo. I'm an inner city, single yuppie - supermarket spend is rarely on food and I don't drive...
