Just got an offer from Qantas for P1s for a complimentary weekend rental of a car from Avis. Quite a good freebee as you can choose any car in the Avis fleet.

Our car partner Avis would like to extend an exclusive offer to you as a Platinum One member.
Enjoy a complimentary weekend rental of time and kilometre charges* on car hire booked and commenced before 15 December 2012. There is no minimum rental period, so you can use this offer on a Saturday or Sunday, or both when you rent for two consecutive days.
You can choose from any available car in the Avis fleet at Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Canberra, Gold Coast, Hobart, Launceston, Melbourne, Perth or Sydney airport locations.
You will also receive complimentary membership to the Avis Preferred program, which lets you enjoy the fastest way to rent cars with Avis globally. Just ensure you present your Platinum One membership card at the Avis counter when you pick up your car.

wonder if they can tell the difference between a WP and a WP1 card...

Isn't Preferred free to join anyway? Pretty sure I never paid for it.

Perfect, I thought, until I realised that:

1. It's useless for anyone going away for a weekend, because the rental can only be Saturday to Sunday, not Friday to Sunday which is what you'd really need, and
2. You still have to pay for the GST and insurance costs, so it's not really a free offer.

Qantas Frequent Flyer Platinum One members are eligible to receive complimentary time and kilometre charges on two consecutive weekend days for Avis car hire, excluding GST, insurance and miscellaneous charges.

I wondered what the * meant that was missing from the OP, by comparison Europcar give you a free weekend thats totally free, valid from Friday until Monday, and a new one is awarded each time you hit qual for Elite. I am picking mine up at noon, dropping back noon Monday.

As an aside don't forget to scroll down the email and take advantage of the "Earn 2000 points With Hilton Worldwide"

A very nice little offer.

I prefer the current Hilton offer for VS, half a J SYD-HKG award fare after 6 stays before year end!

Thanks for that. I didn't notice that before I read you post. I already have 9 stays booked during the qualifying period.

Has anyone tried to use this offer yet?

I get through to the "book" stage but it is still showing the full price. Am I just to hope that when I get to the counter that I'll only be charged for the taxes and insurance (~$45 for a caprice for the day isn't bad :p) ?

Can't speak for this offer, but I have found that they normally quote the full price. There is a note somewhere on one of the pages that the amount will be adjusted when invoiced.

I wonder how they can charge GST on a free time and kilometre charge. They can only charge GST on the insurance and miscellaneous charges, I would think - correct?

Given the way Avis calculates their charges, if the days are free of time and km charges, the only things you could possibly be charged for are the registration recovery ($5.50 per day) and excess reduction if you choose to take it up. If you don't take up the excess reduction (didn't think many on this forum would - I certainly don't!), the max. daily charge should be $5.50 + 3.5% admin fee + 10% GST + up to 20% airport surcharge if collected from an airport, so a max. of $8 per day.

Just rang avis regarding this offer, to clarify about how it says "There is no minimum rental period, so you can use this offer on a Saturday or Sunday, or both when you rent for two consecutive days"

You can use this voucher for any 2 days of hire during the promotion dates, does not have to be weekends only, just mentiones you can use it on the weekends aswell.

You bloody ripper, thanks for doing the leg work, time to book a car for next weekend :)

hmmm, going back and looking at the offer it say:

Might call them myself and see what they say.

So I rang and she read out the terms and conditions "Offer for Qantas Chairman's Lounge  valid to 15th December, can start and end any day"
