SAFETY inspections and repair work on large Australian passenger planes could be carried out by someone with less than one month's training under new air safety rules, aircraft engineers have warned.

In a submission about the Civil Aviation Safety Authority's draft maintenance regulations, the engineers also raised concerns that pilots would be allowed to inspect and fix smaller aircraft,

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Possibly the people with one hours training would be holding the fuel hose not commencing an engine overhaul.

Outrageous that ignorant pilots should be able to inspect their aircraft and that apprentices should be able to work.

More whining from the Union than from the turbofan engines, must get edgy without their regular Christmas strikes and bloated pay demands.

Without the Unions life would be so easy ! ( stop stirring Dee )

Unions do have their place yet some seem to think that it is ok to attack anything that the unions say

I agree with Dee Thom. They sound good on paper, but in reality, they aren't. The communist party also sounds good on paper...
The unions of today are like a bunch of school kids. Give them a inch, and they try to take a mile. I've seen first hand what they get up to and have had to put up with them, god, 99.99% are a waste of time.

Unions definitely waste too much time trying to prove to their members that their fees are worth paying. However I would not like to see a world where the "top end of town" (I dislike that term) has carte blanche. I've seen (and worked for) too many employers who are only too willing to take advantage.

And unions do, perhaps in retrospect, do some good. Think of Jack Mundey and the "green bans".

I have , in the past, been involved with a union in the uk and they do do good things. Not all unions are militant and many do just work for the benefit of their members. In many areas they can be good .

And as a young stirrer I was a "union boss" and led them into their first ever strike.I still think it was the right thing to have done even though my politics have changed considerably.

An other observation on Unions is the damage they did to the good old Brits, especially during WW2, and since; the mess they caused still has England on its knees. You may also notice the number of 10pound migrants who are now in high Union posts over here attempting to stuff those of us who wish to work.
I may not be a big fan of Howards' WPA's, but I made exceptional money whilst on one, and worked my own hours.
But that was the life I wanted and enjoyed..................

That's very good for you, but you are, like many here, are capable of your own work/job/salary negotiations.

There will be, and always be, people who are much less fortunate than you are, less capable than you are, and those that will require the collective power of being part of a union.

This is not really any different to what happens now. Apprentices work on aircraft as part of their training and whilst they are doing so they are supervised. It is all part of their learning curve.

Pilots can currently sign their own Maintenance Releases and IF qualified (that will not change) they can perform maintenance.

Outrageous that ignorant pilots should be able to inspect their aircraft and that apprentices should be able to work.

I agree entirely. The issue, from experience, is that many union leaders do not know where their place is and think that it is ok to attack anything that the management says.

The unions of today are like a bunch of school kids. Give them a inch, and they try to take a mile. I've seen first hand what they get up to and have had to put up with them, god, 99.99% are a waste of time.
I have seen it where the cost to the company and the individual union members is far greater than any gain that is made. Situations that have cost jobs, marriages and even lives.

Absolutely ludicrous :!:
