Pilots attack Joyce over Qantas comments

Qantas pilots have come out swinging against CEO Alan Joyce after he remarked that grounding the airline's fleet had been "positive for the brand".

"I think it has ended up being positive for the brand," he told The Australian on Monday, after the paper named him as one of the most influential business people in the Australia.

I wonder if he is the most hated person on AFF? :!:

Either way I think he is doing a really good job and I believe contrary to popular belief here on AFF he will have a very positive impact at Qantas International. I do not think he will :"Jetstarise" it as much as some folk believe.
Please no leprechaun jokes. Thanks.

In other news, the sky is blue and my handle is anat0l.

On the topic, I think it's comments taken out of context. A snippet that reads, "The [grounding] has been positive for the brand," is easily taken away with the wrong meaning.

In saying that, I think it's a little bit ambitious of Joyce to say that the grounding has had a positive impact per se. I'd be more inclined to see it as a necessary evil, but positive impact is not the first port of call I'd be making.

I do not agree completely that "Any polling and basic common sense will tell you that ... it is going to hurt Qantas's reputation." The reputation was hurt but it is important to note the component of Qantas (not necessarily management) that had a large impact on the company in the first place. The quoting of the comments and redaction by the media is worrying to me. Otherwise, I'm not convinced that "basic common sense" is all it would've taken to get Qantas out of an IR quagmire.

In order to do so we need a leader who is in touch with passengers and not just business leaders

I agree, but I'm not entirely convinced that Joyce is completely anti-passenger, let alone completely indifferent. I'm not convinced he's got a full ear on passengers...

Also, whilst it is perfectly fine for the Captains to say this (as they really did not cause passengers any trouble during last year), had it been any of the other sections of Qantas who were involved in the IR disputes, that would be a fine signal to have them shot. (Steve Purvinas, I'm looking at you...)

I think he is right in general - as mentioned, short term pain, long term gain, but the words he used were always going to mean the journos at the SMH would have a field day and race to the union leaders for comment. His sentiment is right, probably didnt use the most correct wording to explain it.

I agree with his comments.

The many months of destructive union activism has ceased:) - employer & employes have got back to the business of managing & running an airline:!:

Can you explain in what way you believe the media have redacted the comments of Mr Joyce or any other source material.

Without going into specifics. When have the media not been selective with source or sensationalised a story to sell more papers?

Now when does he (AJ) discover there are international airports other than SYD and MEL?

Or am I biased?

You don't give a home base. But I suspect Perth or Brisbane ........maybe Adelaide?

And no Fred you are not biased.

I would have simply left it at SYD. I don't think MEL is really in the game with only 3 QF international services a day. (excluding NZ in the sardine cans)

Mind you this sitiation pre-dates Joyce.

I think he's the best manager an Australian airline has ever had.

... shame it's Virgin not Qantas.

Those NZ sardine cans are some of the newest in the fleet - they won't get any more than 160 pax twice a day, the demand isn't there.

But the whole 'QF is Sydney-centric' arguement - that is where it makes money. PER and ADL don't make money - if they can run services to INTL destinations from there that make money, they will. They can't afford just to put services on there for the sake of it, they are losing some money at the moment

NZ runs about 600 seats a day MEL-AKL and I'm sure they don't do it as a charity. And we do get the choice of a 777.:D
Anyway, getting OT here.

MEDIA = Sensationalism Sells! - All comments open to interpretation..

it's more of a case of selective quoting. The tabloids are very good at that (this is from experience as I work in the industry). To give you the expanded context of what was said:

He said his decision last year to ground the entire Qantas fleet to break a dispute with the unions had been positive for the airline, and its core corporate customers quickly returned to the carrier.

And judging by the flights I have taken domestically, they are high loads.

Agree too. Had he not done it we’d still be facing rolling strikes with no end in sight.

I’m sure I would have been a little upset had I been affected, but he still did the only thing he could do, and it worked.

After spending too much time looking for J/F ASA I've been surprised/reminded just how many ports around the country you can depart on an international flight.

For me, I guess the real positives from the grounding has been how Qantas International now....

- fly so many more new routes. Every month there is a new destination to pick!
- have staff that really go the extra mile and leave the competitors for dead!
- have a frequent flyer program that is the envy of the world!
- have a share price that is "Sapphire" chip. "Blue" chip is so low rent.
- have the single best "Premium" carrier off shoot based in Asia. "Red Herring" has proved all the knockers wrong and continues to soar from strength to strength.

If you get the right day of the week, but not on Sunday.
