A friend has asked if anyone knows a cheaper way to do this?

He needs to go from Perth to Auckland and Johannesburg , though he can go to those two in either order.

Would some kind of RTW/Psuedo RTW be suitable for this?

Wow that's a bad combo.

There's often cheapish combos to fly through Sth America, although a RTW may be better.

Jetlag wise it's be easier to go PER-JNB-LHR-NYC-LAX-AKL-SYD-PER or similar than PER-AKL-LAX-NYC-L:HR-JNB-PER

How close together are the trips ie. is it essential to do it as one trip?
Is he looking to do it the easiest way or the absolute cheapest (jetlag factor not a consideration)?

Personally I'd rather do PER-JNB-PER // PER-AKL-PER as two trips with a night in my own bed than some convoluted routing just to save a few bucks.

Also, when is he planning this as fares should come down to SAf when V Australia start flying there.

No real easy way to do this as a "RTW" staying in the southern hemisphere, particularly as each ocean segment is served by different alliances...

PER-JNB is done by *A, SAA.
SYD-JNB is done by QANTAS.
AKL-SCL by LAN.
JHB-EZE by Malaysian Airlines.

Probably the best bet, is to buy a AKL-JNB ticket with a stopover (or 2) in Perth. The AKL-JNB fares are on sale at the moment, ~$2200 NZD. I think QANTAS codeshare on PER-JNB. It should still cost around $2300 NZD including the stopover. You'll have to buy another PER-AKL ticket, and you'll have another PER-syd/mel-AKL segment that you can use in the future.

Alternatively, two tickets, PER-JNB and PER-AKL. Although a *A ticket RTW "might" be cheaper...

Also, if you do this correctly and credit to AAdvantage, then for 10k points + ~$100 booking & taxes you can do PER-syd/mel-AKL oneway. (or 17.5k in Business). I think US Airways have a similar deal for *A, though it's supposedly pretty hard to get PER-AKL availability on NZ.

What about a circle trip explorer with OW?

PER-AKL-SYD-SIN(HKG)-JNB-PER

Assuming that you can get a SIN-JNB flight on OW. If not then HKG-JNB?

Circle Trip may be the go.

Note that routing will not work as you cannot re-enter Australia ("Country of Origin") twice.

This will work:

PER-SYD/MEL/BNE-AKL-HKG-JNB-SYD-PER.

3 Continent (SWP/Asia/Africa) base fares (with current 10% discount) are $2,880 WHY, $9,090 Business and $12,330 for First Class.

Rules here: http://www.oneworld.com/content/library/circle_trip_explorer_rule_sheet.pdf

I didn't realise that; thought it was the continent of origin rather than country.
Thanks.

Circle Trip looks like much better value.

e.g. PER-AKL oneway, 530 AUD
AKL-PER-JNB-PER-AKL, 2300 NZD ~ 1900 AUD

Total cost ~ 2430 AUD.

oneworld - Circle Trip Explorer

NB, circle trip explorer is only a little cheaper in NZ, at ~2665 AUD. But it would allow for a little more travel in Australia, after the return to PER. Of course, the only caveat, is you can't fly on Codeshares, i.e. JNB-PER. Mileage-wise there isn't much difference between them, maybe 20% more earnt on the Circle Trip.
