They'd have to put you up overnight & send you the next day on QF7 unless you were able to go same day via LAX however the LAX flights may depart earlier which won't help.

Even though 60 minutes is a legal dom to int connection I wouldn't be comfortable with anything less than 2 hours in SYD in case of a delay on your inbound flight.

I realise 2 hours isn't possible ex PER same day so I would ring the Premium Desk & ask if they can move your flight PER/SYD to the afternoon before as that would still be classed as a transit (not stopover) on an international ticket if your stay in SYD is less than 24 hours.

You would need to pay for your own hotel accomm in SYD however but the upside is that you'd get to use the F Lounge the next day before QF7.

Do a overnighter in SYD and then you get more Flounge time

Agree with the others, do an O'Nighter, all it would take is for something to not run smoothly on your PER-SYD leg and you'll be spending an extra day in SYD anyway (as all the LAX flights leave earlier in the day). The other choice is do the red eye PER-SYD if you don't want to fork out for a hotel in SYD. Consider it a case of simply getting yourself used to DFW timezone...

I thought the point of flying J is to avoid long layovers. I will be returning from a two wk European work trip and back in Perth for 5 days before going to US. Really don't want to spend a day in syd. Did ring QF which reassures me 100 min enough and don't want to change flight for me. There must be lots of others doing this routine everyday?

Questions: anywhere I can look up the on time record of the 5:45 Per-syd flight?

Questions: my domestic connections from DFW to ATL on AA is booked separately (paid by a different sponsor). If I miss the DFW flight would QF sort my domestic US flights out or is it my fault?

FlightAware will give you the last two weeks of QF574's flight time.

The thing is from the perspective of someone in reservations when they say "100 minutes is enough" what they mean is "100 minutes is a legal connection". They have also probably never worked at an aiport where you encounter people who miss connecting flights like yours because 100 minutes wasn't enough when their inbound flight was delayed.

As your connecting flight DFW/ATL is on AA & One World make sure you ask the checkin agent in PER to tag your bags through to ATL so remember to take a copy of the itinerary given to you from the client with your flight number & booking class on it.You should also get your AA boarding pass also but if not you'll get it at DFW when you drop off your bag after clearing inbound customs.

I thought the point of flying J is to avoid long layovers....

The class of travel won't affect the duration of the layover. Pity to probably miss the F Lounge in Sydney with such a tight connection though, you being WP.

Class of travel makes no difference to the MCT. All J will do is ensure you are off the plane first in SYD and you have an express card for customs. All it would take is less than favourable winds out of PER, or even something as mundane as a pax doing a no show on boarding, and that 100 minutes will seem very short indeed.

I will be returning from a two wk European work trip and back in Perth for 5 days before going to US. Really don't want to spend a day in syd. Did ring QF which reassures me 100 min enough and don't want to change flight for me. There must be lots of others doing this routine everyday?

Of course QF say 100 minutes is enough, MCT in SYD is 90 min, so a 100 min connection is legal. Of course there is a big difference between just scraping through on MCT and having some excess time in case something goes wrong. All it would take is some unfavourable winds, a plane going tech, or even a pax failing to board to make that 100 min connection seem very tight. The on time record is an indication of how well that flight typically does, not how well that flight will do on the day you chose to fly.

If you miss your SYD-DFW, you'd be on your own negotiating with AA. From QF's point of view, they are required to get you from SYD-DFW, that's it. From AA's POV, you are required to check in for your AA flight in DFW by a certain time. Being stuck on another carriers plane is not an excuse. That's not to say that you won't get a sympathetic agent with QF or AA who won't help you if something goes wrong, but from the airlines POV, QF doesn't guarantee you'll be in DFW at any particular time, and if your not in DFW and checked in by check in close, AA does not need to fly you to ATL.

I always ask myself two questions :

1. Do I have enough time to make the connection (change of terminal/gate)?
2. Does my checked luggage have enough time to make the connection?

Personally I prefer to avoid tight connections as I don't want to depend on everything going right.

I guess it depends on how badly you want to avoid the night in syd. And on how long a connection you have in dfw, and the conditions of the AA ticket.

If you really want to avoid the syd overnight, I'd stick with what you have, but you'd want a decent connection in .

It might hep if you can tell us:

What is you connection time in dfw?
what is th fare basis ex-dfw?

FWIW, AA were ok moving me to a 2hr later lax-JFK when my qf15 was late inbound, and I was on a non-flex Y ticket that had been upgraded to J using AAeVIP (and the upgrade "stuck"). There's no guarantee they'll act in the same way of course.....

Although I haven't done PER - SYD - DFW I've probably done PER - SYD - LAX a dozen times on the last 2 - 3 years. I think the SYD - LAX flights usually leave slightly earlier than the DFW flight (i.e. it's a tighter connection). I've never missed a flight so far and even when the Perth flight has been late arriving I've got onto the LAX flight - I'm not sure if they hold it but it never seems to leave without the Perth passengers.
I think there is a red eye flight that you can take from Perth that gets you into Sydney early in the morning - maybe this is a good compromise if you're worried about the connection but don't want to spend a day in sydney. Not a particularly pleasant way to start a trip (personally I'd go with the tight connection) but an option.

Instead of the early morning flight could you fly the red eye, land early and soak up some quality lounge time?

I am very grateful for everyone's comments. When I didn't have kids and travel just a few times a year, I would definitely stay a day in Syd. Priorities are different nowadays. In Oct I have trips to Asia, Europe, USA and only 8 days at home. Home time is more precious than F Lounge time.

Thank you for sending me the on-time records. This collaborates the comments of Per_Travels which I agree with. Everyone in Perth I know have had really tight experience with PER-SYD-LAX/DFW connections. I had only done it once before and the LAX was boarding when I reached the international gate. I am sure they hold the plane if the PER flight is slightly late. I have just received my APEC card which may help passage at customs.

Of course if the PER-SYD flight is significantly delayed then I will pay the penalty. That is when I am not sure what will happen (and hence this thread). If I can't afford one full day's delay, will QF ever put me on other carriers (I believe there is a UA flight later? or to Air NZ via AKL?). For example, BA had put me on AA flights when their ORD-LHR had mechanical delay. I haven't had similar situation with QF and value comments.

Thank you once again for everyone's time and suggestions.

You can always ask to be transferred to another carrier, but I wouldn't be holding my breath, and in each case you still end up on the wrong side of the US... Also BA and AA as they have an existing relationship they can transfer between each other easily, QF and UA \ DL \ VA don't...
