Hello and Seasons Greetings!

My wife and I will be moving from Perth to Oslo, Norway in the next few months for work.

I will most likely be travelling back and forth to Houston in the US, and we both expect to travel back to Perth several times during our stay. We'll be flying business class on all flights and there's probably going to be a pretty good opportunity to build up some FF points while we're at it.

So I have a few questions, which I'm hoping you can shed some light on.
  1. Best route from Perth to Oslo?
  2. Best airline from a FF FLyer POV for our likely flight routes. We have recently done a RTW trip with Star Alliance, so we already have some points there.
  3. At the moment I think Star Alliance looks the goods - is it true that there's a CC where you can park unused points to avoid the 3 year expiry? If not then OneWorld may be preferential.
Any help is muchly appreciated.

Welcome to AFF Timid! I hope someone else is picking up the bills in Oslo, lovely place but bloody pricey! :)

I know not much about *A but it seems to offer the most options. CO has IAH as a major hub, SK obviously has OSL as a major port, and TG can get you from PER-BKK-OSL. All of course are *A members. LH can also get you one-stop OSL-IAH via FRA.

OW could do it also, but perhaps a little more restricted for options and frequency.

I'm sure someone with better knowledge of this than I will kick in soon!

Thanks for the reply!

Yeah I keep hearing about how expensive it is, starting to get a little scary but work are helping out a bit. The other challanging thing is going to be getting used to the acronyms on this website!

OSL-FRA-IAH with LH looks like a winner, but still not sure on PER to OSL.

Lets say we didn't want to fly TG from PER-BKK-OSL, does anyone have any advice on best airline (business class on *A) that's going to get me to OSL?

Also, can anyone comment on my orignal question on a CC that you can park your points onto to avoid the 3 year expiry?

Cheers!

Well you will probably have to hub out of FRA or LHR.

The fastest flight routing for OSL-IAH is via LHR, so maybe OW is the go for you.
You also have the options of using Finnair for your flights back to Asia - and you have the Qantas flights from LHR or FRA back to OZ

However, I think the kicker is that TG fly direct into OSL, so all things being equal, I'd punt on *A and use the LH, BMI and SAS options.

Finally, as a *A option back towards Perth, then you could look at both Turkish Airlines and Austrian Airlines, both take you into SE Asia....... but I suspect you will not like these options

Also, can anyone comment on my orignal question on a CC that you can park your points onto to avoid the 3 year expiry?

You cannot put your miles from the flights into a credit card account. They will have to go into an airline's FF account. Not all Star Alliance accounts have expiry dates. I think especially the US based ones do not expire as long as there is activity.

I think Thai Airways may be the only one-stop option between PER and OSL. There are lots of 2 stops options, eg on Singapore Airlines, via SIN and ZRH, FRA, MUC, LHR, CPH, etc...
