Hi All... hoping some other AFF members could provide some advice. Looking to take Mrs Rusty over to Mel next year on QF metal in Business A330, trying to use more points than cash if possible. Some background.. we both have $450 AMEX travel voucher, plenty of points for upgrades and both lowly bronze. So bidding for upgrades is out of the question.

When I go onto the AMEX travel site it usually brings up fares other then red e-deal which is fine as I want to be able to upgrade. So I'm thinking using the voucher for a one way Economy S class flight $477 and paying the cash difference. The QF website states 27,200 for a business upgrade (Not sure if this is right, but that's the plan). If there are reward seats can I book and guarantee these right away?

Then returning as I'm bronze I'll have to buy the business class fare via classic rewards which looks like 41,500 + $37 each.

Sorry for the winded post... and happy to hear any other suggestions.

On PER-MEL also look at the QF 10 flight option on the Dreamliner.

Are there outright business Reward seats available on either leg? Might be more cost effective to take a reward seat compared to a points+pay compared to an economy seat+upgrade request.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

On the A330, if there is a Business Reward seat available, any upgrade request should clear immediately.

I assume the QF10 will follow the international rules of the lottery.

No business reward seats on QF10 in Business unfortunately. Did a quick check and it's $148 + 166,000 QFF points if I paid with points and cash outright and didn't use the voucher.

I think the voucher is wise to use when you can get a red e-deal flight through the site.

I have never seen any FF seats for the QF 9/10 domestic legs.

I frequently fly from PER - > MEL and vv. My usual booking strategy is to firstly, be flexible. Next is to look at flights which have J FF seats available. If I am flush with points, I book using points only. If my points are low, I either book non flexible Y and pay 27200 points to upgrade. Or I book flexible Y and pay 10900 points. They are about the same price (around $1000) if you factor in having bought the points from QF. Once I have made the booking, I go to manage my booking and do an instant upgrade.

However, recently I needed to make a booking for next month and there were no FF seats available. I paid for J and my poor husband is booked in Y and has put in for an upgrade. We have our fingers crossed that his upgrades come through.

PS I would never use points for a Y flight.
