Looking forward to reading - I've never been further south of Perth than Mandurah but have been as east as Wave Rock and would love to go to Margret River. You were lucky to get an A330, I went to Perth for the first time post-COVID over the Easter weekend and my flight got swapped to a 737 at the last minute.

Look forward to the report on both hotels.

Did Lamonts Smiths Beach 12 months ago - was very disappointed.

That's disappointing. I've never been there but the Cott Wine Store has always been amazing in my experience. What went wrong on your visit?

A lack of waitstaff (an issue facing quite a lot of South West hospitality vendors then/now), and really disappointing food. Went for dinner, and also had breakfast there (we were staying at Smiths Beach Resort - which we loved). I'm often easily pleased with anything put in front of me at breakfast, but it was really poor.

Excellent night's sleep, which is unusual for me.

Woke to morning views, had a quick swim, and then back to the Crystal Club for breakfast (included).IMG_7407.JPGIMG_7408.JPG

That night we went to Rockpool. I won't waste your time with a review. It was terrible.

After two nights at Crown we hired a car and drove down to Margaret River. Stopped in Bunbury for a quick lunch and refreshments.

Third and 4th nights we stayed at the Grand Mercure in Basildene (King Suite). Had a nice little balcony.

Breakfast was very good, the grounds lovely. The room was so so.
Would I stay here again? Maybe. (7/10)

For dinner we went in to town and had a pub meal at Settler's Tavern whilst watching the AFL.

Had a quick dip to wake up. Joined by some dolphins about 5m off the beach. Unfortunately I didn't take my phone/camera. Just a magnificent part of the world.

We had 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts at Lamonts. I was a bit hesitant as there were reports of it not being so good. But we loved it. Either we have low expectations or something has changed. Staff were very friendly and the food was excellent for a "beach resort".

We were due back in Perth for a late afternoon flight back to Mel the following day. Decided to take a long drive down and stopped at a few places along the way.

Random shots:

We hadn't booked accommodation for the last night as I wanted to leave options on the table so halfway back to Perth I booked a night at The Cottesloe Beach Hotel.
When we arrived we were greeted with construction, noise and dust etc etc from some external works. So we cancelled (the Duty Manager was very nice about it) and I jumped on line and booked a (confirmed) night at The Esplanade in Fremantle.
Drove to Freo and went to check in. Was informed there were no rooms available... (?) Tired and annoyed I just shrugged my shoulders and walked off, put the suitcases back in the car and drove to the beach to calm down..
Jumped on the phone and booked back at Crown, so back to Perth we go. Another lovely night at the Crystal Club, breakfast, a swim and a late check-out.

Next day we drove back to Freo to have a look around and get a light lunch then headed for the airport and dropped off the (excellent) hire car.

Bit of a kerfuffle at PER when the luggage system went off line. My partner had a run in with one of the staff as she was basically yelled at for having an overweight bag during manual drop off. When I calmly pointed out that it was 27kg and we were allowed 32kg (for J and/or OWE) she got even more aggressive and yelled at us in front of the queue that "I don't care, you still have to pay for excess weight"
The irony is she was standing right in front of this sign when "arguing" with us.
I just glanced at the sign, turned away, ignored her and spoke to another lovely lady who just said "I'll handle it". I'm still not sure what the first lady's problem was.

Anyway, in to the J lounge and a lovely easy flight home on the A330.

What are your thoughts about the Smith's Beach accommodation?
Pricey, but we really liked it. It was larger than I expected. Upon reflection I would have booked an extra night there and driven back to Perth on the last day instead. Live and learn.
Some of the "cheaper" apartments looked a little dark and unwelcoming. The lower floors seemed to lack privacy and of course water views. You can see from my photos there are some rooms where we could just look straight in from our balcony.
If I stayed again I would book the same category as you get the sunrise and sunset, great views all day and good privacy.
In-room facilities are good. Lovely warm fire. Sat TV with all the popular channels, sports etc.
Good WiFi (I never use free wifi but I tested it for speed etc).
Car park underneath, Laundry in the room. Plenty of glasses, crockery etc. Coffee plunger with ground coffee and milk supplied. It was very quiet, however with the pool in the middle of the complex, I'd guess it gets very noisy in peak holiday times.

Thanks for that info.
