I know this is probably a "how long is a piece of string" question, but can anyone who's recently come back through Perth International give me an idea of approx how long it's taking these days to get through Customs/Immigration/Quarantine? Hubby is coming back from London next weekend, arriving on SQ223 from SIN at 1440 on Sunday. Just wondering roughly how long to allow after the plane lands for picking him up, so as to try to avoid paying more of those delightful airport parking charges than I have to! I know there's the "Park and Wait" section further down the road, but he won't have his phone so can't text or call me to advise when he's coming through, so I'll have to bite the bullet and park up in the main area and wait in the terminal. It's been several years since I've picked someone up from (or returned through) the International terminal, so I have no idea how long these things take nowadays!

Many thanks :)

What class of travel? That may have an affect on the answer

Economy (sorry, should have included that!).

A quick look at the Perth Airport web site shows it quite that time of afternoon, so I will say he will clear everything very quickly. The only delay will be collecting any checked baggage, as they are very slow at Perth.

Parking is not expensive at the international

0- 15 min FREE
15 - 30 min $4
30 min - 1 hour $6

I know the parking's not hugely expensive, but I'm a tight-ar$e when it comes to stuff like that :) especially as I now have to pay for parking at work, and the cost goes up every 6 months - I think paying for parking in general just gives me the irrits at the moment LOL. I always try to time it so that I don't go over the hour at the airport. I notice they're actually offering free parking at the domestic terminal (not the international one unfortunately) for up to the first hour at the moment - wonder what brought that on?

Baggage collection always seems to be interminably slow at Perth, doesn't seem to matter whether it's domestic or international, but fingers crossed he'll get through fairly quickly for his sake - after the long flight from London (neither of us can sleep on planes) and only a couple of hours in Changi before heading for Perth, I'll be lucky if he stays awake for the drive home!

There are a couple of variables, there is a Malaysia Airlines arrival at 15:00 and Thai shortly after that, so provided SQ is on-time he should get a good enough head start, but as you mentioned, the early delivery of baggage can be cruicial. The two choke points are Passport control and Customs/Quarantine clearance. The quickest I've seen an Economy passenger with bags, clear the whole process is about 15mins. With multiple arrivals at the same time, the average would be 30-35mins if I had to time it. But I've known it can take up to an hour or more if you get caught at the back of either of those choke points I've mentioned and there is 3 or 4 flights on the ground at the same time.

The one hour free you refer to is for passengers using Terminal 2 (newest terminal adjacent to International T1), as the short-term carpark is not open at T2 yet the airport is offering 1st hour free parking in the International short-term (must validate ticket at the T2 pay machines which is about 100m walk).

So that is an option if you are happy to take the walk over to T2. Otherwise that first 15mins you get free is usually enough.

Au Citizen with AU passport issued after around 2006? Can use smart-gate and avoid one major hold up. Class of travel a big factor but we often get through from row 45 economy within about 20-30 min of landing, with baggage and nothing to declare.

Good pickup - it is indeed referring to T2. I'd been clicking between the parking pages as I have to go to the Domestic Terminal in a couple of weeks and must have forgotten which page I was on! Oh well, I don't mind a short walk, so I might look at that as an option, depending on how long I end up having to wait :) .

Thanks for the info everyone - hubby doesn't usually have anything to declare, so we've rarely been delayed at Quarantine. I'll probably aim to arrive about 15 mins or so after the flight lands and then keep fingers crossed that those bags come out quickly and he's not at the back of the queue!

Quarantine is the biggest delay at PER, so I always make sure I have ABSOLUTELY nothing to declare.

We arrived back on QF Singapore flight last Friday nite 11-20pm went thru the smart gate with passport, 3 in each que were lucky with cases waited about 3 min nothing to declare straight out, so after getting off plane about 15 min, best exit ever.

It certainly has improved over the past year or so. Good to see :)

It all depends on timing. Found it to be the worst it's ever been in October but there were a number of flights in at the same time.

Since the QF partner with EK started, it seems to have ease the arrivals esp around late/mid night.

They surely have public telephones in the airport for your husband to use.

Yes of course they do, but not until you get through Quarantine etc and out into the main terminal - the last thing he's going to need (or that I would ask him to do) after nearly 20 hours of travelling would be to go traipsing through the terminal looking for a phone! I mentioned that he won't have his mobile as otherwise people would have (naturally) suggested that he text me whilst he's waiting in the Quarantine queue (assuming you're allowed to use your phone in that area) and then I could take my timing from that.

I go the total opposite, and make sure I do have something to declare. Means I can go either the Red or Blue channels, and bypass the idiots who clog up the Green channel on the 0100hrs QF78 arrivals.
