We're travelling into Perth domestic (Qantas J) on a Saturday, mid afternoon with our CX J flight to Hong Kong at midnight. We've never travelled on an international flight departing Perth before.

Realise we'll need to transit to international terminal (free shuttle ?) and reading some old threads, it seems that the Lounge, check in desk and customs isn't open for much of the day. Is this still the case or have things changed? Are we able to use the domestic Qantas lounge (Qantas Gold status) before heading over to the international terminal as we've got a bit of time to kill?

Personally I would leave the airport for the arvo and then come back from your flight. For somewhere close, head to Crown as you can get a bite to eat, coffee etc and even dinner before heading back.

I would assume you could already have your bags tagged through to Hong Kong since it's still OW.

Perth airport is boring and not a place I would want to spend hours at! 2 hours in the lounge in about the max you would want.

Getting back to the internationally terminal at that time of night you would want to leave Crown around 9:30/9:45 as it's only a 15 min drive.

Can I have my luggage tagged through even though they are on completely separate tickets with different carriers (albeit OneWorld)?

I would have thought you could.

Maybe someone else who has done a QF - CX flight could answer but it would be in their baggage interline agreement.

As for getting boarding passes issued when you check in for your qantas flight I'm also not sure.....

When you check in for your Qantas flight though before leaving for Perth, you want to line up at the service desk that should be highlighted as international connections in the domestic terminal. Make sure you have all the itineraries for the cx flight too.

This was my experience for a QF - AA flight from per - Lax - Las which were on separate tickets.

QF will through check on separate PNRs in limited circumstances, travel on OneWorld is the main requirement. There should be no issue using the Domestic lounge as you have a flight with a OneWorld carrier that day thats onward (as opposed to arrivals access) but I echo others comments to get out of the terminal.

Grabbing a rental car and heading over to Scarborough to watch the sun set in the ocean (a novel sight for us East Coasters) or down to Freeo might help break the trip, or even Burswood for dinner as suggested.

Thanks for all the info. My main issue was dragging th luggage around, so if I can check that through, then that makes all thedifference.
So best plan is to rock up to International terminal nosooner than necessary.

And on our return, we need to pay $7 each for the shuttle from the domesticterminal as we're transferring from another carrier. What a rip off.

We've been to Perth a few times, just never travelled internationally from there.

Inter-terminal Shuttle is free now, for all carriers. Runs every 20mins.

You should have no issue checking in your bags all the way to HKG with CX. I had QF check mine in from SYD to TPE just the other month without batting an eye-lid.

The lady at the first check-in desk was very nice, the bouncer at the entry was not.
