While it passed with little fanfare, a week ago marked the 20th anniversary of the International Terminal at Perth. At a function held to commemorate there were some discussions of the future of the airport. Some of the future plans that were discusses included dealing with some of the issues that the airport has, and how it is going to cope with contiuing growth. These include

a) A review of the current car parking situation with plans for expansion due early next year

b) A study into the capacity of the three terminals, which may include merging the terminals. The study is looking at the terminal capacity, car parking and the ability to access the airport through the existing road network. Essentially what infrastructure is required over the next 20 years. Due mid 2007.

Merging the domestic and international terminals has been in the long term plans for a while (i.e. about 2018), but I understand that there have been some discussions about bringing the plans forward.

I believe airports that have the Intl and Domestic terminals next to each other are much better airports for transit.

Solves lots of absurd problems.

Wish more airports in Australia would consider it.

Please can somebody put "overhaul the Customs debacle" on the agenda? It's embarassing listening to the comments of international visitors coming to Perth (while in the queue). I'm pro-quarantine, but this system is a total mess, and does nothing for first impressions of Perth. I understand customs themselves have a lot to do with it, but improvements to the actual "make-shift" look-a-like customs area (mainly the queue system) are needed.

Well the terminals are so far apart (ie; not connected by a direct road) that I think we should consider renaming the airport to a more user-friendly coding system. Instead of PER, separate the city code into two:

1. Name the international terminal PIT (Perth, International Terminal)
2 Name the domestic terminal POO (Perth, Occluded Obscenity)

Pax can then clearly see if they have a POO-PIT tranfser, and plan ahead accordingly.

Hi All,

I'm planning a QF Syd-Per, MH Per-Kul run in September on 2 different bookings. Arriving late at night, I have a tight-ish 2'40" connection time. From what I've read it looks like its best to get a taxi (or use MH's J class limo service) from the DOM to INT terminal?

Appreciate your thoughts.

LOL! But seriously, how hard would it to put a road in so we don't have to travel out Great Eastern and along Tonkin Hwys. Even the longish journey down Horrie Millar is a PITA.

It can be a nightmare to get from the domestic to international terminals - particularly if there is an event or two in town and all the taxis are busy. Surely Westralia Airports should invest in an airside shuttlebus to get from one to the other.

That makes too much sense for it to be considered without a 6 month review into the need and ramifications.

In fact there's not so much traffic that you couldn't run the bus along the taxiways.

A company called Ground Transportation Services provides these services, but I think they have to get between terminals on road, they can't go across the airport.

I can understand their concern when it costs $25 to go between terminals in a taxi. :shock:

Almost cheaper to hire a car!

As annoying (and expensive) as the transfer process is, I do wonder just how big a problem it is. I mean just how many int-dom transfers happen (and I suspect that apart from the transfers of people flying between Joburg and Sydney, and the JohnK's that transfer in the dead of night, that there would not be that much happening.

Realistically, I think Perth Airport has much bigger and more pressing issues to solve than the transfer situation. It could all be done by biting the bullet and expanding the international terminal into the planned joint facility, building a multi-storey carpark, and making sure the road access was sufficient (doesn't take much to fix!)

I know a few people who work in the admin side of Perth Airport, and I know that they have had a huge 'clean-out' among staff there recently. (As lots of companies do)

I honestly think that this isn't on the priority list - the airport has bigger problems like over-capacity to deal with first.

One thing the mentioned was that if I need a lift between terminals, they're happy to give me a lift across the apron! (Maybe they were just joking though!)

It would be nice if they would do something. They must be raking in a great deal of money from all the land development that is going on around there, they should be putting some back.

Let's face it. The airport as it currently stands is an absilute disgrace. The parking situation is a disgrace. The congestion in the terminals is a disgrace. Sitting in aeroplanes for 20 minutes waitng for other planes to get out the way is a disgrace. And for these substandard facilities they charge just like any other airport in the world.

It is quite embarassing to listen to tourists have a whinge about the airport while one stands in line because the airport treats its users with contempt and does not provide adequate facilities for the number of people using the airport.

It is unfrotunately difficult to perceive that they are tackiling the problem in any long term fashion. It is easy to do, I just don't think they have the will to do it.

You're just thinking about QF international flights. There is also NZ, EK, SQ, MH, etc

I still wonder just how many transfers occur off these flights. While there would be some (to regional flights etc), I still think it would be a realtively small number. In any case, if a couple of these flights arrive together the time taken clearing customs/immigration is probably longer than the journey to the domestic terminals.

It is also the opposite direction There are flights I can't take because the transfer takes too long (dom->int as well as int->dom).
