Howdy,

This may be a stupid question.... but, whats to stop someone buying several gift cards in the following way:
Buy $1,000 giftcard. Get 1000 QFF points from CC.
Spend $1,000 giftcard by buying $1,000 giftcard. Get 970FF from Woolworths for redeeming a giftcard.
Spend $1,000 giftcard by buying $1,000 giftcard. Get 970FF from Woolworths for redeeming a giftcard.

Walk out of shop 5 minutes later with
$1000 Wish giftcard (can use for petrol/groceries)
and 970*9 = 1,000 QFF points?
=9,730 QFF points.

Can't see anything int he FAQs for Woolies Giftcards that would prohibit it.

Bonus points if you go to a Woolies where you know a checkout chick.

Buying giftcards does not earn FF points on the Everyday Reward program. They are excluded from earn.

The FAQ says redemption of Gift Cards earn points.

If you redeem gift cards for gift cards, according to my reading of the FAQ, you earn points.

Is my reading of the FAQ not the way it works in real life?

You earn points on using GiftCards...it is treated the same as cash or credit cards.

But just as with cash, or CC, certain items when bought NEVER earn points...tobacca for example....and giftcards too.

Please buy those gift cards at 5% discount to face value on your Visa or MasterCard that earns at least a point per dollar.
Now you pay $950 for $1,000 of gift cards and get at least 950 points. Then if it is a Woolworths essential gift card you pay with the gift card after you have had the EDR loyalty blipped to get a further 970 points. So now you have 1,920 FF points and a spare $50 in your pocket plus a big smile on your face!

Now the two ways to get those gift cards are RACWA for Essentials Gift Card or thru work ordering $8,000 minimum for $7600 Wish Gift Cards which are easier to use. In each case a 5% discount applies and if you think thru the transaction you are achieving the discount plus double frequent flyer points that in total you could consider as about 10 per cent off.

HOw is it double FF points?

Option 1.
Buy $8000 of groceries, get 8000+7970 points.

Option 2.
Buy $7600 of $8000 gift cards. Get 7600 points. Spend $8000 on groceries, get 7970 points.

Thanks for pointing out the inevitable flaw lovetravellingoz .

Double compared to spending the same amount elsewhere, not EDR.

The everyday rewards T&C's is quite explicit:
The following are exclusions from the qualifying spend in respect of the different stores:

• Supermarkets and Woolworths Liquor
Smoking/Tobacco products & accessories, Gift Cards, Cash Outs, Home Delivery Charges and Internet Cafes

Yes we still mostly shop at our locally owned IGA,a green grocer and a butcher as we don't want our local businesses to close forever and leave it up to two evil empires to shadow box.
If you want to save a few dollars then you can use this path to save and fly.

Just pointing out too, you would be hard pressed to get the 7970 points as you wouldn't spend the 8k in one spend.even if your bill was $200 per visit, that's about 40 shops so you lose about 1200 points. so it is more like 6800 points

Yes it is easier to run the Essentials restricted card as you can get $100,$250 or $500 cards each day so it is less dangerous to carry those around rather than having up to 16 $500 cards.
Having the first $30 earn no bonus points is an issue that is for sure.

Every gift card offer I'm aware of prohibits gift cards being used to purchase gift cards. This is to prevent people "extending" the validity of their almost expired gift cards.

Conversely, my understanding is that most POS systems don't enforce this, so look for the Trainee cashier and try your luck!

No it doesn't - I remember working at Woolies and splitting a guy's $500 gift card into a few smaller ones.

If anyone says no just try another store/operator.

Yes...BUT it will not earn FF points. So if that is the purpose you will be disappointed.

If you want to "extend" the life...or as in this case get other "denominations" then all is good. But no FF points will result.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I've always gotten points buying gift cards at Woolies and scanning my EDR card. Red balloon vouchers, Gold Class Giftcards, Dymocks - points are received from purchasing all of these.

The biggest risk with gift cards is where a lot of folks don't ever fully redeem them or just let them expire.
