Hi all, looking to travel one way business class PER to AKL in November. Should we try the direct NZ 787 flight or take Qantas via MEL or SYD and perhaps Emirates First Class to AKL. As its only a short hop is first class worth it?

Any advice is welcome.

I have done Perth - Melbourne (QF) and then AKL with Emirates in J

I would always fly that route for QF credits and who dosnt enjoy a few days in melbourne on the way

If you need to return, back this way F from AKL to SYD/MEL/BNE is worth it as it is an evening service. IMHO it would. It be worth it for the morning service. EK business across the Tasman is great IMHO.

Forgot to say the neighbour did the Per -Akl direct flight left here about 7pm and arrived 6am ...said it just about killed them in Y

A friend of mine does this route often in J. He thinks the NZ J offering is really good.

Unless you are chasing SCs or really want to try F on EK for the short hop, I think the NZ option would be the way to go.

Could you travel AKL-PER instead?? It's longer in that direction so you get to enjoy it more. Pros and cons for both.

Leaving in your current direction if you fly NZ 787
- QF international lounge out of Perth - not Qantas best lounge
- you leave between 7-8pm. If you want to enjoy the flight you stay up for the meal service, so by the time you're done you only have maybe 2hrs to sleep and you're ready to land. Or if you want to sleep you go to sleep! i.e. lack of sleep leaves you grumpy on landing!

Using QF
- Leave from Perth Dom J lounge - one of my favourite Qantas lounges, has pizza in the evening - perfect! You can get on board and sleep, not sure I'd stay up for food.
- Transit MEL - it's less hassle than Sydney and you'd get slightly more time flying on EK F or J class than flying from Syd.
- If flying F you get the F lounge which is nice.
- At least you might be awake on the EK flight to enjoy it as it leaves in the morning
- Either way you'll get to NZ with minimal sleep no matter NZ or EK. EK have a sale on currently on fares in F

If you fly AKL-PER NZ it's day flight so you can be awake to enjoy the whole thing!
Or EK out of NZ then evening flight to enjoy then possibly overnight in MEL or SYD then QF the next day.

Other options are flying VA PER-MEL A330 J connecting to NZ J via ...probably SYD. MEL has a temporary lounge maybe til March when the new lounge is completed.

Thanks for all the info. We're meeting a cruise boat in AKL that finishes in SYD so no can't travel AKL to PER.

I think we'll go with QF/EK PER/SYD/AKL as the 10.40am departure from SYD gives us more time in F lounge.

Thanks again for all your suggestions.
