Hello Hive Mind,

MrGlider and I have a need to visit HKG from PER at short notice this weekend. I'm required to be in HKG during business hours on Friday. Ideally flights would be direct, leave on Thursday evening, and return on Sunday, or possibly Monday at latest.

CX currently have a sale on, $930 return pp in Y, flight times are good and flights are direct. I'm aware that J* and AirAsia are offering slightly lower fares but prefer a good full-service airline and short flight duration. Not interested in connecting via the east coast of Aus.

I'm happy with the CX Y offering, but wanted to know if anyone had any ideas of how I might get on the same plane a little closer to the pointy end economically. Unfortunately I wasn't in a position to buy AA miles in their recent promotion so currently have 0 miles there. SQ have a couple of ok flight options too, and I'm a LM and SQ member but have recently also cleaned them both out to 0 miles too. :( I've given it some thought but I can't see a way.

We'd like to spend under AUD$5000 for 2pax return in J, ideally on CX but SQ could be acceptable (or other excellent carrier I haven't thought of). We'd also consider J for the PER-HKG overnight sector on Thursday night and Y for HKG-PER daytime on Sunday. Fully lie-flat seats for the overnight is a huge drawcard.

Any brilliant ideas folks?

Thanks for your time,
Carolyn

The reward seats are there, 130,000 each return on QF (redeeming on CX). Not much use though if you've got no OW points floating around.

How about CX PE? Looks like around $1800 return. Not J, but then not $5000 either.

Greenfish, Thanks for that.
Your PE suggestion just made me realise that the $930 Y fare is actually return per person not each way. Cheap as chips! (I've just been doing some complicated Europe planning so didn't batt an eyelid at $1800 return Y fares to HKG, silly me).

I've flown Y and J before (though not on CX), but not PE. Is Premium Economy worth extra outlay? Especially if the Y cabin isn't full and there's a chance at a spare middle seat?

Markis10, currently not USDM members, happy to join.

Wont help joining as you need to wait two weeks before buying miles, but worth looking at in future given they now are OneWorld members with their points bonus promos.

I think you have missed a trick here and should reconsider your aversion to Air Asia X.
Air Asia X and Jetstar have a completely different Business Class offering.

Air Asia X offers a full lie flat Business Class seat for the longer PER-KUL leg of the flights.
You also get checkthru baggage you have pretty good connections and great price.
Depart Perth 6.50am Arrive HKG 8.35pm
Depart HKG 6.15pm Arrive PER 5.35am
Price: $1869. (Cheaper if you book as separate one-way fares ;))

Sure you don't get free beer but at $5 / beer and a business class seat, does that really matter.

Personally I'd take the CX PE as option 1 (just because it is a non-stop flight and you get lounge access if you have status) and then Air Asia X as option 2.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.
