Hello!

Looking at heading to CNS in late Jan 2017 and the red eye via BNE on either VA (473) or QF (652) unfortunately suit me best.

I can pay/bid/whatever to upgrade so assuming I get a J seat, which would you choose?

Both seem to be currently 737s, I am not sure if there is a plan to change this soon or if one airline has a higher likelihood of subbing for a better plane/seat etc.

Would love to know your thoughts!

As you're unlikely to get any meaningful sleep onboard, you'll most likely get better food on VA but better service on QF. Of course YMMV. What status, if any, do you have on either?

Currently back down to NB/Red on both!!
I've been flying via points etc this year so my status has dropped

Should have mentioned it's mostly about the sleep. I make do with 4-5 hours anyway so the flight will be absolutely fine for my sleep needs (I'll be asleep the minute I sit down to the time the doors open).

Not sure which has the better seat?

If both 737s I would be tempted to fly on VA, easier chance to upgrade to J on Virgin.

Virgin would probably have less service which might suit you fine.

Also Virgin leaves first so that may be better.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If the flights are both 737's, is there a chance of going to CNS via another transit point?

Thanks so far. Leaning towards VA for those reasons Bundy.

Nothing else seems to be offered at a similar price Mannej, I'll look again though.

Ooh. QF 568 is an option actually.
How can I upgrade the flight if booked in a discount Y?

I feel your pain - doing that flight in mid Feb, but it's showing as an A330 on QF652 then.

Got me a date with The Boss. Two actually... :)

I always fly QF652 , usually on a Tues but sometime Wed.

I can't remember the last time I got a 737, it's always a 330 on Tues or Wed.

Other nights may differ though.

Every time I see a 737 on either PER-BNE or BNE-PER I'm straight to the J upgrade if I can't take a different flight.

5 hrs in Y in a 737 is a nightmare. On either carrier I'd suggest.

Transcontinental, I cannot comment. BNE-CNS I can. I'd say QF has the better seat, but VA wins with pitch, food (scary, I know), little things like blocking the J dunny and blocking whY on edit and most importantly, the chance of a shadow.

I like either and similarly, both can be a PITA!

If I were you, I'd be planning
a) more sleep at night (your fitbit must hate you); and
b) a transit where an 330 flies (in which case VA all the way makes a great deal of sense)

As someone who also tries for Y>U upgrades ex-Per, I've noticed QF seem to fly the A330s for the transcon red eyes Sun-Thurs and back to the 737s Fri/Sat (when there presumably are less businesspeople onboard that need 3.5 hours of sleep before the meeting)

So I'm guessing you're flying on a Fri or Sat night; any chance of changing by a day?
