Last weekend I tried Hainan Airlines for the first time flying return from Beijing Capital to Shanghai Hongqiao.

Departed Thursday night on a B737-800 that was comparable to a QF 738, albeit unlike the newest QF 738s that have the international standard IFE installed (as I was fortunate enough to experience when flying MEL-ASP earlier in the year). Remarkably for a flight departing PEK, boarding was on schedule and we touched down at SHA at precisely the scheduled time! Check in was a breeze with a short queue and the check-in agent spoke good English (although this meant I wasn't able to practice my Mandarin). It seems Hainan have T1 at Beijing almost all to themselves. Security was quickly cleared and the experience very pleasant and efficient. Refreshments and peanuts were served on the flight. Cowmpared to MU, I felt the hard product was slightly better (far more modern than the A320 and A300 I experienced on MU), but the refreshments had less variety on offer - only tea, coffee, Coke and juices. No 7-Up like MU!

On the return flight, I only discovered after clearing security that the 8pm return flight had been delayed one hour. Eventually boarded just before 9pm, but the waited on the tarmac another hour. This meant the stewards and stewardesses fed and watered us before take off. They came around one more time for water during the flight, but a 10.55pm PEK arrival had become at least 1am from memory - was very tired. At least this time we were on an A332 with IFE, so I managed to get through 2 movies in that time starting from the tarmac. Luggage was a bit slow to come out at PEK and the queue for taxis horribly long, not to mention the annoying touts for fake taxis harrasing you.

Overall I found the HU experience very professional, great modern hard product and would fly them again. Only complaint is the A332 seat seemed difficult to recline, but I think that was just a fault with my seat or it was a bit stiff, as others seemed to get marginally more recline than me. The J product also looks good, in fact it startling resembles the new J product the FJ CEO was promoting recently on their new A330 order. Return was 1100 RMB booked one week in advance on ctrip, which I thought was good value given it was very much a last minute booking. Plane was full to the brim on both legs, and both were flights after 8pm.

Well done. Good to read about less "mainstream" experiences.

Ah don't you just love China?

The taxi situation in Beijing in general has become a nightmare. I have no hesitation in taking one of the black / gypsy taxis at times - certainly not from airport but say from The Den to Chocolate or Centro - sometimes you can wait for hours - and don't think any Chinese will adhere to the 'you were here first so your first taxi' theory - it's every man for himself.

I had five days of internal flights in China last week. Remarkably the delays were minor. I flew PEK-SHA with MU on an A330 and it wasn't too bad at all. With no status I found myself three rows from the back. The meal service looked OK. (I tend not to have Y meals regardless of airline) The entertainment system consisted of drop down screens and had English sub titles. I found the tendency of pax to unbuckle their seat belts and wander about the cabin immediately after landing a little disconcerting.

MInor delays in China, especially involving PEK, is an enormous stroke of luck on your part then!

I also tend to avoid Y meals too. As for the pax wandering about after landing, that's a very Chinese thing. Never abiding by the rules or etiquette!

My colleagues had some wry smiles on their faces during the week. "Mr Frequent Flyer" over from Australia.......and utterly clueless about air travel in China. They were very surprised by the lack of delays, and made it very clear that I had been incredibly lucky.

Priority pass proved very handy we used lounges at SHA and XMN. They were not brilliant but they provided a meal and drinks.

More to come in January when I head back to PEK/PVG and head up to SHE.......and all in Y

And how did you handle the incessant phone usage?

Thank god i have a very understanding MD who insists 100% on J travel for all dom flts in China. :D

You'll love PEK in Jan - jeez it gets cold. A few years ago on New Years Day I flew MEL-PEK - dep temp 40C - arr temp minus 10C - what a shock to the system.

I think SHE will be even colder....but that doesn't bother me, I'm no fan of the humidity in Shanghai. PEK last week was perfect. 18 deg C and "relatively" clear skies.

I'll have a stern word with the chap who sets the travel policy but I fear talking to myself will not get me anywhere!!!!! :)

China continues to blow me away.

Unbelievable isn't it - I love it with a passion - although a week stint there sees me out.

Which hotel you stay? Get to The Den? Magges? Chocolate? Suzy Wongs? Vic's? Centro? Swing Bar?

In PVG it is The Hilton....and I am very fortunate I have an excellent country manager who takes me to the "local" restaurants and bars. He likes to challenge my tastes, the sandworms in BHY were.......OK. I love the Hot Pot restaurants. I absolutely despise the Filipino Bands playing at hotels and bars though. (No problems with the people it is the whole concept I despise.)

What I really like is the way people just get on and get things done.

Flying and travelling in China's fairly special.

Courtesy is out the window, and I just love the sounds of men snorting 20 litres of snot back down their throat, followed by 5 minutes of coughing it back up and spitting it out.

Love China!

Yes there are a few aspects of Chinese society which are 'interesting' to say the least - but if they are too overbearing I guess you might need to another country to visit.

At least they don't shoot girls in the head for daring to turn up for school....

Chinese airlines are fine, the Chinese are fine, the food is great & I've enjoyed everyone of my trips to this wonderful country.

I have a month stint in PEK coming up in November/December, with day trips out to XIY and SHA (though this one is yet to be booked) planned on HU/MU for XIY and (at this stage) CA/MU for SHA which will be an experience I am sure. Anything I should watch out for or know?

I flew CA XMN-PEK in Y and it was fine....in fact better than any JQ flight I have taken. There was a meal and drinks (non alcoholic) service.
