I have a paw in both.
As in thread title: which to go for?
VA a trip in J ADL SYD AKL codeshare VA NZ. Return trip in J.
QF a trip in ADL SYD AKL codeshare EK but QF code. Part in F and part in J.
This is to collect enough SCs to retain either VA PS or QF PS... one has to drop to No Status after. Not retain both.
Opinions?
Am thinking of retaining QF PS.
Hard decisions...
Play nicely.

What do you see as the benefit of retaining Silver? Seems like a lot of money to spend....

Buying lounge access instead with VA would seem like a good investment whilst you get the PS discount as long as your flying can be mostly domestic with them.

Unfortunately, I would agree here as there is a discount offered for lounge access as a Silver member. That said, it really depends where you do most of your domestic flying as to which airline, and thus FF program would give you the best value.

When I was NB I was strongly discouraged from going for Silver... look at me now :p

yohy?! and samh004 have given excellent responses. I must admit, I was ecstatic when I reached DJ PS.......because it meant I could buy the lounge access for a discount. The figures worked and it generally worked for both DJ and myself. AustraliaPoochie, don't kid yourself that two silvers are better than one gold. If you can, strive for VA (easier to get Gold), forget QF (if your flying schedule permits it) and buy VA lounge whilst you have silver at the discount. If you reach Gold before your lounge access expires, they give you a pro-rata refund.

VA are a right royal pain in the butt at times, but for the PS level, they shine brighter than QF (IMHO).

Yes, coming to conclusion of flying TT J all the way from ADL to SYD to AKL and return yo keep VA PS.
Will keep QP though, seeing I already have access to QP as it is.
Can't let go off my Kapiti fetish at WLG QP.
Don't suppose they have Kapiti in Koru Club?

Good on you. You stick to your guns then!

PS....I've only been in the BNE Koru Club and I'd have to say that poking toothpicks in ones eyeballs rates at a fairly similar comfort level! YMMV.

AustraliaPoochie, no one has mentioned the Lifetime status benefit with QF... If you're within reach of a lifetime status level, that might be worth factoring in.

I have 15xx worth of SCs, about 20% towards LTS, so long way to go.
7000, ouch.
Paying the $300 for the Lounge membership as a VA PS, first year, and then pay the full rate as VA NR, in the end, would be saving me more money.
I don't travel for business, (do have an ABN though, but does not do any good, as am not an end business), so can't claim travel as a deduction.
VA PS gives two free entries to the Lounge in Aust. NR no free entry, but cheapish $65 per entry per travel.
25% or 50% FF mileage bonus helps a bit, this goes for both QF and VA.
Coming to the conclusion, paying for VA lounge and QP would be the best and cheapest option overall.
Not like as if PS gets a hush hush upgrade, (thought there was that benefit of PS-but no such luck), eh? SG gets it all.
Anyway, thanks all who have replied.
I will join the VA lounge and keep paying QP.
$1100 (QF $520 + VA lounge ($300) as PS, then full hog vs $2000 odd for doing one huge MR in J/part F.
Would be a different kettle of fish if I could charge my travel to someone else!
Ok, back to the "daily grind".
Coffee, coffee, anyone for coffee, tea? Tea will be coming next, ... coffee, anyone for coffee (pun on JetConnect's service! Sorry, wry I know.
