I have never heard of them.

Have you tried a Google search?

.... There is not much on Google about them when this two post thread comes up as the fourth item in the search :!:

No I didn't try a Google search - thought it best to try here first and get accurate info.

Came across this thread via Google Search and your interest in Passport Premiere which we thank you for. We were not previously aware of this site. As airline seats are commodities , we provide trading solutions for purchasing premium class travel. Our philosophy is that you wouldn't purchase other commodities (i.e. gold, silver) without knowing what was paid yesterday, last week, or last year and air travel shouldn't be any different. Knowing a fares expected trajectory for a given set of travel dates and route is also helpful prior to purchasing.Like commodities and equities, volume plays a significant role in determining if the current ask will "catch a bid" or if price reductions will be needed to move unsold inventory price to expiration. In airline terms, expiration is defined as when a scheduled flight departs.

For complex or multi continent itineraries ,off shore origination is a must if you reside in Australia. You are likely aware that Australia is among the most expensive countries from which to originate an Around the World ticket.....

We thank you for your interest and if you have any additional questions don't hesitate to ask

Bumping this thread, as I've just heard from a US-based friend, who reports that colleagues of his have been very pleased with their experience of Passport Premiere. For example, booking a flight to Oz in Business at a significantly cheaper rate than another colleague on the same flight in Coach. (He did not report which airline.)

Membership is not particularly cheap, so before I explore further, I'm wondering if anyone here followed up on the initial query from Cruiser Elite?

It seems that the company is actually 1st Air-net, with Passport Premiere being one of their services, and there is, in fact, a scattering of unfavourable reviews on the web but nothing very recent and earlier reports seemed favourable.

I will go back and ask my US contact for further details of their colleagues' experiences and, if anything useful emerges, will post here.

It is highly likely, of course, that AFF expertise would out gun the discounts offered!:)

pj I have not actually used them as yet - but 3 times I got VERY CHEAP quotes from them on MEL-PVG / PEK routes.

One quote for J was MEL-PEK on MH and PEK-MEL on SQ - $3.5K - which is cheaper MH rate ret - so if you throw in ugraded SQ product it looked quite attractive.

IIRC from their emails min spend is 3K.

From reports elsewhere, I would not have any thing to do with any entity associated with 1st-Air.

While some may have good results the chances of their methodology failing are too high for me to consider taking a risk.

We thought the purpose of a moderator was to remain objective. Your post regarding Passport Premiere and our marketing partner appear to be nothing short of scathing to say the least. Are you even familiar with our methodology? You state that the chances of failure are too high? Is this your opinion or fact? Do you even have a clue of what we do? Yet, you are using your "moderator" status to influence other members of Australian Frequent Flyer? Do we sense pressure from advertisers? Its happened before.

Luckily, we don't face this conflict of interest at Passport Premiere. We are compensated through membership dues paid by our members and not through commissions or advertising dollars. In exchange, members receive objective analysis on when to buy. Like other commodities, we encourage members to purchase when carriers show weakness on a given route. NEVER BUY INTO STRENGTH. As an example, most carriers operating between the U.S. and Australia direct listed minimum business class fare levels of $7,088 + taxes in January 2012 despite weak forward demand. Passport Premiere advised its members to HOLD on purchases in anticipation of lower fares. On February 9th, 2012 all four carriers operating direct service lowered business class fares to $4,200 + taxes. If you had bought a non refundable business class ticket in January at $7,088, how do you feel about overpaying by nearly $3,000 in addition to giving a use of your money for an extra month? The answer is not very good.

For our members, we act as a market advisor. This roll is common in other industries but not in travel until now. We are not an agent, broker or consolidator. These groups are conflicted by serving two masters simultaneously: the customers to whom they sell tickets and the suppliers they drive revenue to. Ultimately, the supplier (i.e. airline) will always have the upper hand in influencing an agent. broker or consolidators decision for their travelers.

Agents, wholesalers, and consolidators are taught by the airlines they represent to "make the sale today." When a prospective client calls today, tell them the fare is valid for 24 hours or it will be cancelled tomorrow. These backroom sales tactics are littered through the travel industry to create a pressured packed sales environment. But the question should be "Is it really a good deal?" And is the pricing really going up on that flight I am being told to buy today with 45 unsold seats in business? We strive to provide our members the upper hand in completing a travel trade. After all, buying an airline seat has become a trade.

Our methodology as you put it is to determine for our members if today's great deal is really so great or if it may be better tomorrow. When you buy a house, do you agree to buy the first house you see and pay up on the spot without researching what other houses have sold for in the neighborhood? Same principle applies for a car. But with premium class travel, airlines have programmed travelers to point, click and buy without knowing what that business class flat bed sold for last week, last month or what it may sell for tomorrow .The funning thing is that none of these physical assets described will depreciate as fast as an unsold airline seat, yet the airline industry masks this accounting fact with an escalating fare system.

As demonstrated above, maintaining objectivity for our members is of paramount importance. We would suggest that as a moderator you offer your members that same courtesy.

My post was purely as a member of this site and a very frequent and experienced traveller. If posting as a moderator we make it obvious (e.g. [MOD HAT] tags).

Now - "Scathing"?? if what I wrote in post #7 would be consider by you scathing I then suggest you are rather sensitive.

To imply my post may have been influenced by "pressure from advertisers" is an insult.

Now, as for "scathing" I shall post no more other than to shortly provide some links to a few references that indicate reasons for my comments in post #7.

Hmmm, seems the post Passport Premiere wrote in this thread earlier today has been removed.

And now it's back. Mods, I think that was a good decision.

I cannot, for the life of me, fathom how so some businesses do not "get" reputation management in the internet age - particularly businesses targeting the web for new customers.

Entirely ignoring the fact that the views Passport Premiere expressed in their earlier post are paranoid, insulting and ridiculous, even if you (as a Passport Premiere representative) held such views you'd have to be crazy to publicly express them in a major travel related forum. You're instantly alienating a major segment of your potential Australian customer-base, not to mention that if you search for "Passport Premiere" on Google AU this thread is the second result shown.

Some time ago, but anything related to 1st Air is not something I'd encourage.

With thousands of 1st-air.net related links, there are unfortunately a few that are negative . While Passport Premiere and its partners strive to exceed its members expectations, a small group opted to post derogatory comments over a 15 year period. It is believed that the links referenced by the moderator were not created by actual customers, but by competitors whose business models were challenged by 1st-Air.Net. In the case of Flyertalk, the post count for several members opting to create negative comments is low. A lowp ost count (in some cases fewer than 5) does question the legitimacy of the author and their statements. According to Google, there are over 70 Flyertalk threads that feature the 1st-air.net URL. Of these 70 threads, 5 (7%)can be classified as derogatory and the moderator selected two of these five. A sample of neutral or positive comments is below which outweighs the negative threads by over 10 to 1. Those post count for members posting neutral or positive comments tends to be much higher, and in one case in excess of 45K. To reiterate, we do not believe the negative posts to be factual

We only ask that moderators present a complete and accurate picture prior to forming an opinion and influencing other members. As a moderator, you have a duty to remain objective. Surely, you have the ability to pull ALL of the Flyertalk links and see the vast majority are positive or neutral. As links were previously added to this thread by the moderator, we believe the links below (some recent and some from the same time period that the moderator selected) must be included in this post to provide members a complete and accurate picture . This is only a small sample of the links that feature Passport Premiere . If anyone would like to see more or has any specific questions, please feel free to ask.

I took the time to read the first five links which this person representing 'passport premiere' has posted,

Everything about them stinks to high heaven of astroturfing. For those not aware of the term, astroturfing is defined as:

A form of advocacy in support of a political, organisational, or corporate agenda, designed to give the appearance of a "grassroots" movement. The goal of such campaigns is to disguise the efforts of a political or commercial entity as an independent public reaction to another political entity—a politician, political group, product, service or event. The term is a derivation of AstroTurf, a brand of synthetic carpeting designed to look like natural grass.

Some of the clues that giveaway these are astroturfing messages:

  1. Posted by users who only have a single review to their name on a site, and it's in relation to a single company.
  2. Reference to the companies name in the exact same way, right down to capitalisation, in a way that would be consistent with corporate style.
  3. Deliberate use of the companies URL in the text body, usually in the first line (deliberate attempt to improve SEO for the company).
  4. Unnatural messages - don't read as written by a normal human: Seems like marketing speak as in too close to a companies positioning points, excess use of sentences and capitalisation of words.
  5. Doesn't pass the sniff test (if it looks too good to be true...)
  6. None of the forum messages confirm any of the results or statements - they're just someone suggesting to use them. Nothing has come back to prove the claims of the service.
  7. Any official mouthpiece never highlights bad information about them. Exhibit A: Anyone used 1st-air.com? - FlyerTalk Forums

Their site

And not withstanding, their website design and code is circa early 2000. They obviously can't be that good or profitable at what they do, as they can't afford real people to maintain their site and content (a lot it has been edited in MS Word); and continue to run the site in the Cold Fusion programming language (a dead language that should have been buried years ago).

And their press releases - egads. If the person who authored those claims to be a professional they must be high. Those are some of the most god awful press releases I've ever seen. No wonder they didn't get published independently by a 3rd party and they had to pay for them to be released on wire services (hence why there are Yahoo links, so those can automatically be discounted as having no authority as they are just wire service press releases).

And who are the people behind the company?

I'm going to go out on a limb, and say that the person behind the Passport Premiere account is either Mark Wahlen (my 1st guess based on the poor quality of the language and the close match to the press releases), or the mysterious Rafael Resendiz. Of course there's no information on their website exactly confirming whom their executives offices or company staff are - getting those two names took a little work. (Correction: since found it, but it raises other questions).

The only references online for Mark Wahlen all come from paid press release wire services. He has no profile on any professional networks or sites, nor does he seem to be a member of any credible PR body. There's nothing about who he is to show what he's about and his background.

Digging into Rafael Resendiz, just brings up even more question marks. Again, nary a mention in any credible sources of record, and again no profile in any social network. References for him to 1st Air turn up a lot of mentions on paid-for newswire services, a truckload of spammy blog sites (used for Black Hat SEO techniques - see dictionary under bad and evil) and comments offering nothing of value at all, and spammy sites where you can pay (or occasionally free) to list details of your company that no credible entity would touch with a 200ft bargepole draped in a hazmat suit with its own oxygen supply.

And let's dig deeper shall we

Looking into their domain registration, we can use that to find more information about this company.

2007 Canadian lawsuit for not paying their credit card company back for chargebacks

I bet 1st Air don't want you knowing about the 2007 Canadian lawsuit brought against them and related company MAR-RAY Associates, Inc. and their Canadian entity Livingston Travel, by Ticketmaster Canada, who sued 1st Air for nearly USD 100,000 in damages for failing to pay monies owed due to credit card chargebacks.

And the outcome, default judgement for Ticketmaster Canada as the companies and individuals Robert Laney and Jacqueline DiBella who were also later added to the docket as respondents in the case failed to show or enter any defence.

Sadly my search-fu in getting details of the BC Supreme Court docket in this case was a little poor, but I'll speak to some friends in those circles in North America to see if they can find the case and citation on LexisNexis or similar databases to confirm it.

Livingston travel yields more information

And looking at Livingston Travel - well what do you know, information on their shady past continues to turn up, a-la this FlyerTalk thread from 2003. You can read it yourself, but it backs up why the 2007 case was brought by Ticketmaster Canada - that's for sure. It also backs up some previous claims about dubious booking practices relating to their ticketing methods.

2001 shows up even more dodgy booking practices, with this Flyertalk thread covering hidden cities and illegal fares booked by the company.

And no suprise, there was even an anti-1st air site running at one stage - http://www.1stair-not.com/. Sadly it wasn't popular enough to be stored by the Internet Archive's Wayback Engine.

Robert Laney has a dubious past too

Looking into Robert, we turn up another court docket: Incentive Connection Travel, Inc. v. 1st-Air.Net Inc. (D. Ariz. Dec. 27, 2006).

I'll let NV Flyer take up the story on this one:

According to ICT, 1st-Air.Net “engaged in the use of ‘hidden cities’ and ‘throw away’ segments, and other prohibited ticketing practices,” thereby violating the contract between them. ICT terminated the contract, which contained an arbitration provision. 1st-Air.Net filed a demand for arbitration; ICT filed a counterclaim, as well as a third party claim against 1st-Air.Net’s principals, Jackie DiBella and Robert Laney.

But the most interesting tidbit of that report is a paragraph above that:

According to ICT, 1st.Air-Net “is required to use host agencies because, among other reasons, United Airlines terminated its Sales Agreement . . . and the Airline [sic] Reporting Corporation terminated the ability of First Air . . . to purchase tickets.”

I wonder why UA would have terminated the agreement of 1st Air - would have had to be both serious and a really good reason for it.

And Jacqueline DiBella

Well, she's the only one I can actually find credible information for. According to her LinkedIn profile, she stopped being an EVP of 1st Air in June 2006 - but they still list her as on the board of directors.

She seems to be the only person out there for whom decent information is available on, including the fact she likes to vote Democrat and contribues to their campaigns frequently.

Having said that, she also for a time seemed to either be running or be directly involved in another low-rent virtual agency called Hi-Qual Travel run out of NY.

So in summary

Everything about this company, the people involved with it, their reputation, and how they do things stinks to high heaven.

And worse, because 1st Air continues to troll the internet, they have just brought upon themselves the proverbial Streissand Effect. I can guarantee that any searches for 1st Air by weeks end will have this post and the thead as a whole appearing as #1 on related searches for the company names, officers name, and related parties. They won't be able to escape from any of their past, current and future misdeeds again.

So well done Mark and/or Rafael. Your inability to keep your mouth closed has given this ol' school nerd and researched a good enough reason to dig around in your publically known and publically available pasts and find out all the things and link to them that you don't want prospective customers knowing. <sound of a golf clap>

You appear to have missed the first line of serfty's post #7 above.

In the thread serfty is posting as a forum member, which he is entitled to do, and not as a moderator. If he was posting as a moderator it would be obvious as he would identify himself as positing as such. For the purposes of accuracy this is an important distinction.

Well their search referrer traffic is going even closer to circling the drain, as people find out this company isn't even fit to be guarding the local garbage tip let alone a travel booking business.

It's actually been like that for quite some time - certainly since at least 5th of May (see my post earlier in the thread on that day).
