On the occasions when passengers in the cabin clap after landing... can the pilots actually hear this, and do they appreciate it?

Probably a cultural thing, but hopefully the flight hasn't been so bad that they're so relieved to be on the gound that they need to express it. Personally, I didn't care either way.

Never been on a flight where the pax have clapped but the lady next to us on an Aegean flight had her rosary beads in hand and blessed herself 5 times when we landed in Rhodes.

16 Sectors crisscrossing South America, every flight clapping on touchdown. When final seatbelt sign comes on before landing at least half on board either got out their rosaries or did a cross of their chest.

OK, so looks like it's a cultural thing in S America. Looking back at our Aegean flight, the first half of the flight was nice and smooth; the second half was far rougher than any other flight I've been on.

I'm sure our neighbour wasn't the only one using rosary beads.

Back in the 80s we flew in and out of Moscow for work as a transit port. Some of the passengers would applaud once we were airborne
My wife flew out of Sochi straight after the Winter Olympics demi-recently (2014 I think) ... lots of applause when the flight landed in Switzerland as pax knew they were now safe from the Russian regime. Weeks of drunk uniformed 16yo gun-toting mini-Hitlers barking unexpected random unexplained orders at you has an unnerving effect ...

Only time I have ever been on a flight where everyone clapped upon landing was in 2008. I was on a clapped out Soviet coughbox (probably a Tu-154B from my hazy memory) flying from Pyongyang up to Samjiyon to see Mt Paektu on the Chinese border. The entire time the engines were screaming their cough off and when we landed everyone was just thrilled to still be alive.

In normal circumstances I would put people who clap upon landing in the same category as the weirdos who clap at the end of a movie.

Used to be very common around Sth Am 20+ years ago. Much less common now.

Could the mods please edit the spelling in the title please
