On QF 1011 MEL-HBA this morning the CSD made an appeal to all passengers requesting (5 minutes to departure and the plane is FULL) that one person give up their seat to allow a gentleman to get to a funeral in Hobart.

This flight departed at 8:50am and as compensation a Jetstar Flight departing at 4:30pm plus access to the QP was offered.

Very kindly a couple behind me offered a seat that their two year old was occupying and the gentleman was most grateful. Kudos to the couple and their consideration of others. I hope QF refunds that child's fare.

Before this I did offer my seat but I said that I needed to be on the next DJ or JQ flight to Hobart. These were not options the CSD or gate staff were willing to contemplate. The notion of a DJ flight looked as if I had mentioned the devil.

This is the first time I have had a call for volunteers in Australia. Plenty in the USA and once the parents got hotels and 200 Euro each for delaying a day in Vienna with OS. I think QF were just a little cheap offering only QP access. With this they also removed any chance of a status passenger or a QP member volunteering. A 7 hour delay plus access to something you have anyway!

I was very glad that the gentleman found space.

I volunteered once, on a BME-PER flight. A guy's seat was broken and he HAD to be back in Perth that day (it was also a full flight). As it was a Saturday, I was more than happy to spend the extra day in Broome to get home Sunday.

As compensation they put me up at the Cable Beach Club Resort and flew me home J

A great outcome if you ask me :!:

We had similar out of LAX to AKL with UA.

We delayed a day, they put us up for the night incl all expenses and bumped us from J to F. :D

How about then we go with the Formula One hotel at MEL airport and a JQ exit row? ;)

I gave up a QF J seat on PER-MEL a year or so ago to accommodate a connecting International passenger. They offered a bottle of wine in compensation.

I was re-booked on a flight that was 2 hours later but was then delayed by a further 2 hours! My brother, who was collecting me, was not amused :(

That is a very poor offer of compensation but I guess there are not that many alternatives to get to HBA. Isn't there normally a QF1019 flight that leaves just after 2:00pm?

You would hope that the least QF could do is refund the child's airfare but judging by the previous offer who knows....

Of course the difference here is that QF did not HAVE to carry the gentleman on that flight. They were trying to help him out. It was not a case of seeking volunteers or they will have to involuntarily deny boarding and hence fork out compensation. Sounds like a good approach was taken and a good outcome - so long as the 2yo fare was refunded as already suggested.
