Panel falls off Air India Dreamliner

I wonder if it was a panel that had been removed by an engineer and was not fitted correctly or was it more bad luck for boeing.

So many more questions

Not enough info but one wonders if it reflects ground support (of a new type to the company) than a specific fault of the aircraft type.

Load factor didn't sound too good (only 150 pax - how many seats are they fitted with in AI config?)

Without any information is this just like the panels that have fallen off some of the A320's for JQ(PER) and BA (LHR)?

Yes I like the reassurances of "It was not an emergency. There was no safety problem,".

No it is very much a safety problem. Parts should not just fall off your airplane mid flight end of story. Apart from the fact that it brings to question maintenance procedures, it's pretty sucky for the poor people on the ground who may be hit by a falling parts of your airplane.

I like the bit about it not being a safety issue; unless you're the poor sod who lives along the flight path.

I thought this too.

Wonder where the panel comes from since the B787 is a manufactured as a spun barrel vs the A350 which are panels?

Looking at the photo it is a part that is held on by multi fastners so my take on this is that it is an Air India maintenance issue rather than a Boeing issue.

I wonder if that is where one of the ELTs is normally kept, which were subject to a recent AD. Could be a case of the Dabbawala turning up with lunch just as they finished the inspection and were about to screw the panel in![h=1][/h]

This does not appear to be an Air India maintenance issue after all.

Fresh Problems For Air India's 787s

A preliminary investigation by India’s aviation regulatory agency of an Oct. 12 incident involving an Air India Boeing 787 indicates that a riveting flaw in the panel covering the heat exchanger unit could have caused the panel to detach from the fuselage.

The 8 ft. X 4 ft. panel Bengaluru International Airport fell from the underside of the jet and landed within the perimeter of Bengaluru International Airport, an Air India official says, noting that “the panel has since been fixed and the aircraft is in operation again.”

Those pesky rivets; which were one of the causes for the delay in launching the 787 initially!
