Bookings of many airlines have been badly hit by the virus as Asian airline PR today announced a US$208 million loss last year, its highest ever.

However this airline (NH of Japan owns between five and 10 per cent) has just announced (to 15 March) a sale on its ex-Australia routes via its website. Make sure you select country 'Australia' on the site.

Travel is from April to 10 December, and includes a wide range of destinations.

It's much cheaper on PR via MNL to BKK than another deal another AFFer posted in this section from BA.

Oz to YVR (say from SYD, A$4280 return or BNE, A$4500 return in J) seems a good fare, and not much more to JFK.

PR flies A333s ex MEL and SYD, 1-2-1 Thompson Vantage XL lie flats in J, while its A321neos are on the BNE and soon to restart PER routes with Australia's only offering of 2-2 lie-flats in J.

It has a far more extensive Japanese network than QFi or JQi. 'Open jaw' fares where one flies into one city and out of another, and purchases a Japan Rail Pass for the surface travel, makes a great holiday (notwithstanding problems in Japan with the virus.)

Between MNL and LHR or JFK, it's a new A359 with 1-2-1 also in J, 2-3-2 in W and 2-4-2 in whY.

If you visit or telephone a Filipino travel agent - there are quite a few in Oz - most will be able to beat the website prices.

Many won't want to travel now, largely because of the risk in being 'locked out' of Australia, but if you're confident that it will (to use a bad pun) 'blow over', then save yourself some many dollars compared with flying with expensive QFi and book on a good carrier like PR.

Corona virus wouldn't have anything to do with a loss last year...just bad management!

I don't mind PR for short domestic hops but can't get past their non-existent lounge network, terrible Terminal 2 in MNL and no useful FF programme...I'll stick with OW.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Fair enough, but for those whop prefer BFOD, these fares are very good value. Agree T2 MNL is very poor, but other factors once one is on board more than compensate. That terminal is only a little more than 20 years old: appalling design, no restaurants, pathetic shops...overall I feel like I'm in a public hospital.

QF is second rate but hard for FF like you to abandon it given its network. Wish you luck in redeeming points.

Exactly, PR has its faults like all airlines but effectively you are getting 2 for 1 to JFK compared to QF. I’m not sure I can justify a few QFF points for the price difference.

PAL Advisory #34

In compliance with the Philippine government's Enhanced Community Quarantine measure over the Region of Luzon, including Metro Manila, ALL DOMESTIC FLIGHTS of Philippine Airlines are CANCELLED effective 17 March2020 until April 12, 2020.
Flights shall resume on 13 April 2020.
We continue to operate INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS up to 11:59PM March 19, 2020.
We will announce in due course the status of our international flights from March 20 up to April 12, as we are presently coordinating with government authorities on the relevant implementing details.
PAL will comply with the travel restrictions set out in the quarantine rules.
The PAL Manila Airport Ticket Office at the NAIA Terminal 2 will remain open from 2:00 AM until 10:00 PM daily, 7 days a week. However, all other PAL Ticket Offices in Metro Manila will be closed to comply with the quarantine directives.
For travel and ticketing concerns, please call our Hotline at (63 2) 88558888.
We respectfully request you to consider deferring any requests for rebooking until after 12 April 2020, in view of the strict social distancing required by the quarantine measures; we expect a high volume of queries and transactions at the Ticket Office as well as the Hotline, and we ask you to bear with us as we deal with the challenge of handling an unprecedented number of cancelled flights over this quarantine period.
Please note that this is a developing situation, and the quarantine rules are subject to periodic review by the Philippine government's Inter-Agency Task Force for COVID 19.
We seek your kind understanding and patience as we cope with this major challenge and make a collective sacrifice in the name of the national interest and public health.
Thank you.
