According to Qantas’ published policy on through-checked baggage, yes you can check baggage with seperate PNRs from QF to Oneworld when on a combination of commercial fare and reward fares.

However, in the last couple of years I have not been able to convince QF agents at MEL or SYD to do it. Those were both QF to AA.

QF Policy is thru check to a OW "Revenue fare" from a QF Reward flight. The reverse scenario Paid -> Reward doesn't work.

Both my examples were QF reward to AA revenue… QF agents refused.

I had no issue in SYD QF J reward to AS revenue. The problem is not many agents know how to do it now, so you might get the “Not possible” response. I take a printout of the QF policy just in case.

Either way, OPs scenario isn’t covered by that policy. I’d post the current link but it’s alluding me now.

^ Exemptions apply for customers travelling on a oneworld separate PNRs when using a combination of award travel and revenue travel. Note: This is a Qantas exemption and may not be supported by all oneworld airlines.
Direction not stated. Nor if QF or another airline award. Or QF or other airline revenue.
Award to award would not be covered.
The wording could be better.

Apologies if I wasn't clear.
I have booked and paid for in cash a Q flight from BNE domestic to SYD domestic. this has one booking number.
I have a 3-hour layover before boarding an award flight booked using Qantas points from SYD international to Zurich via HK on Cathay, this is on a different booking number.
My question is when I check luggage in at Qantas Brisbane domestic will it be sent direct to Zurich without me collecting it at SYD domestic and rechecking it in at SYD international if I show at check-in, I have the subsequent SYD to ZUR Cathay flight with a different booking number?
I appreciate your thoughts.

Yeah, that's the info I've seen but I believe there is a regular PAX version of that somewhere - not just the TA portal.

There's also this, which is more confusing:

"Classic Reward and Commercial bookings:
  • If you purchase a Classic Reward Ticket for one leg of your journey and make a commercial booking for the second leg of your journey via a new booking, provided you're flying Qantas on all flights your bags will be tagged through to your final destination."
This is possibly were CR -> Revenue sequence gets picked up - although it's specifically QF to QF.

This is clear as mud to the exception rule:

"What if I am travelling on separate tickets?
  • If you are travelling on oneworld flights on separate tickets/bookings you are not eligible for through check -in (except if you have a reward or commercial booking and advise airport staff at check-in)"
🤷‍♂️

What QF states and what QF does are always 2 different things anyway. The website also states they should through check and issues tickets for QF -> EK on different bookings but ticket agents refused even at QF first check in.
  • For QF/QF and QF/EK flights on separate tickets/booking will through check-in and boarding pass will be issued
The only thing you can really do is turn up at BNE, explain the case and it's a toss of the coin whether it'll go through or need to be collected.

Get as early as you can to BNE dom terminal at the airport, and explain, if you are lucky, they might put you onto any open seats, for earlier dom flight from BNE - SYD.
You will or should be able to do OLCI with the carrier, ie, it will be with CX from SYD.
www.%cathaypacific.com with your CX PNR, take away the percentage mark.
Main point with doing OLCI, is to let the airline know you are ready, but this is only part of the job done, still need to do bag drop and get passports swiped.
Then just need to do bag/s drop in SYD T1.
If QF will link bags, then lucky.
If not, 3 hrs can be quite tight, esp as you have to exit into public area at SYD T3, grab bags, grab a taxi, go across to T1, then bag drop, get passport swiped, and then go through immi and int security.
If it was all a linked PNR, then you would just need to show passport to be swiped in BNE.
But as the operating carrier is CX, passport swiping will need to be with CX.
As you have bags, you will need to have bag tags, so the CX kiosks would not do.
But if you succeed with OLCI, and can print BP, then its half the job done.
Make sure to still get BP from the airport staff, though.
Best of luck.

Thanks for everyone's replies!
We will state our case in Brisbane and will give feedback on how we go !
Note that check in for domestic connections to international travel (e.g. BNE-xSYD-SIN) needs to be done 45 minutes before the domestic flight departs.

Given your circumstances, I'd be looking to get to BNE check in 90 minutes beforehand.
