Oversized bicycle on QF from Japan

I want to buy a bike in Japan and bring it back to Oz. Simplest thing to do would be to get it delivered to to the kuroneko counter at Narita and check it in. I’d expect checkin to be sticklers with the tape measure but, the shipping box exceeds the Qantas maximum bike dimensions bike some margin.

It will pack down smaller and I can bring a bike bag that fits the QF bike dimensions, however I’d rather save the hassle of repacking it if I don’t have to.

Some other airlines will allow you to pay for oversize baggage but I can’t see any reference to this on the Qantas website. Anyone know if I can pay for oversize?

(Also anyone know if pkm68 got his propellor back to Oz?)

I'm pretty sure you can check it in as oversized luggage. As for whether you need to pay I'm not too sure.

I mean plenty of people fly ski's and snowboards to Japan so I'm sure it's possible.

Especially because it is Japan; I want to know exactly what the rules are because what ever they are they will be enforced.

I can find nothing on the website or in the conditions of carriage.

Indeed, we had 5 framed prints bought in Taipei which were professionally wrapped by the gallery, bulky but not heavy and they accepted them at the oversized luggage point which was only a few metres from the other checkins. The best part was that on arrival in Perth they were first off with our other luggage. We were well under our baggage allowance and don't recall having to pay anything extra for the prints. Hope that the same rules apply out of Japan for you...

This seems pretty clear - I would expect Japanese check-in agents to follow this very literally, even if it's possible to check surfboards, snowboards, and other larger items.

You can travel with your own bike box, however it must not exceed the dimensions below and must be properly and securely packed.

Yes, those are the rules for bikes and I expect that is the limit, however some other airlines allow you to pay more to go oversize. Was trying to find out if that is possible with QF.
