Man, they are so stupid, with comments like we killed him now we can bring the troops home. All symbols and no substance, they just don't seem to understand the war they're fighting. :(

Malaya v Vietnam, says it all really. (Despite US propaganda otherwise.)

Hearts and Minds!!

I wonder if things could have been different if it had been decided to use covert forces with minimum publicity to track and eliminate Bin Laden, rather than billions with maximum publicity?

He was a scumbag (i'd use stronger language but maybe not here) and good riddance to him, i won't shed a tear over his carcass.... Hope he isn't too disappointed when all the promised v!rgins don't materialise...

His being taken out may not end the war but its still meaningful to the relatives of the people he killed, the city of New York and Washington DC and all the soldiers, emergency responders and other people fighting to protect America that if people come and kill and mutilate them, that they will be pursued and found and retribution delivered no matter what rock they hide under and no matter how long it takes... Letting people do what he did and then giving up once it gets too hard or its taken too long won't stop one single recruit from joining his bunch of crazies...

Now its Al Zwahiri's turn...

Maybe not but the way the war is being undertaken also drives recruits to them. It gives truth to their message and criticism of the US. But can't disagree on what you've written.

Why do I find this story hard to believe?

The facts: America's most hated villain (possibly of all time) has been killed (or executed) yet they respect him so much that they gave him muslim burial rites by dumping his dead body in the Arabian Sea a few hours later.

How many times has the story of hic capture/execution changed in a few days?

All of this is very convenient at a difficult time for the US president.

I would like to believe Bin Laden is dead but I am afraid he is still very much alive. Waiting. Waiting. Waiting....

I’m not sure if this should perhaps be in a new thread, but it is related to this, has anyone seen the photos released by Reuters… the tail of the crashed helicopter is a very interesting design indeed.

I have to say the more that comes out of Washington the more I am concerned. The situation just gets more confused.
I am not surprised that we have articles like this appearing-
Operation Get Osama signals loss of values

Although I can agree with many of the sentiments I fear such criticism is going to be used by the likes of Al qaeda to inflame the situation.

I am preparing for more dangerous times ahead.

It's a stealth helicopter isn't it, lots of nice interesting surfaces and angles.

Yeah it looks like from the tail the blackhawk (or nighthawk) helicopters that the 160th aviation regiment that trransport special ops missions must have some sort of stealth element to it... Not surprising i guess when they have missons to enter potentially hostile nations for insertions and either don't want to give prescence away and helicopters are pretty slow, old easy meat for any opponents air force to intercept if picked up on radar...

And from my perspective i get as bored with the people who claim to believe nothing (usually followed by tellings us all we are gullible sheep because we believe the moon landing etc or 911 wasn't planned by Israel/CIA) as those people who believe everything they are told... I think the details keep changing coz the press want to print something in the frenzy and aren't overly concerned with the accuracy of it... I'd more than likely say he's dead, the government don't want to inflame islamic nutbag opinioin by showing off all the gory details and be seen to be doing the right thing, but frankly instead of the cutesy burial at sea i would dumped him on some rubbish tip somewhere... Perhaps made up a story about all very respectfully handled etc, but he would have got none of it from me...

Edit: From Wikipedia
In the 1 May 2011 operation that killed Osama bin Laden, it emerged that the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, which operated the helicopters during the raid, used a heavily modified version of the UH-60. Features apparently include a modified tail section with extra blades on the tail rotor and other additions which significantly lower noise levels from that of conventional UH-60s. It also had low-observable technology similar to that of F-117 that enabled it to evade Pakistan Air Force radars. The aircraft seemed to include features like special high-tech materials, harsh angles, and flat surfaces, found only on sophisticated stealth jets. This came to light only when one of the helicopters used in the operation crashed and was subsequently destroyed except for its tail section.
