Recently I was on AA61 DFW-NRT that was delayed due to a tyre change which caused me to miss my connection onto an AA codeshare on JL to SIN. This was a real problem as it was the last flight of the day. They eventually put me on the SQ service via BKK the next day.
I filled out the online form for missing mileage thinking it would be no problem, but I was denied the claim. On the online form I clearly put the flight numbers involved as well as the ticket number.

Dear openseat,

I apologize that you've been kept waiting.

We are sorry to inform you that it is not our policy to credit AAdvantage mileage for segments that are not flown due to operational problems beyond our control. While we understand that AAdvantage mileage is one reason customers specifically book trips on American Airlines and other program participants, we cannot credit miles for travel that did not occur or that was conducted on a nonparticipating carrier. We are sorry for your inconvenience and wish you had been able to travel as planned.

Now the rub is that the delay was mechanical at DFW (change of a tyre) which really is in their control - that is maintaing their aircraft.

Does anyone have any advice what I should do? Am I expecting too much?

The flight was supposed to push me over to Plat, so I am currently languishing at Gold. I don't fly again on oneworld until May, so I have a bit of time up my sleeve to get it right. I just want to ensure that I have it fixed up in time to get the 100% mileage bonus in time.

Thanks

You'd get better results if you ring up AAdvantage customer service. It's an unofficial policy that you'd get original routing credit, though the AAgent will put it to you as a "just this once" favour.

Don't forget to claim your *A miles too. ;)

The rules do state that there is no mileage earned in this case; since you have been denied by AAdvantage, you could try contacting customer service, but be prepared to have them tell you that it has already been dealt with and denied

I'm a bit tardy responding, apologies for that.

I rang AA (Gold desk:() and the agent was very pleasant. I didn't have to beg. She was concerned that I was delayed so horribly.

The miles and Plat status  appeared after about 12 hours. So
my upcoming work trips should enjoy 100% bonus.

Thanks for the advice Dave and QF009.

I'm glad you got a good outcome, and congrats on your shiny new PLT status! :D

My shiny new PLAT card arrived today. It was posted from Belgium. Nice to see the validity to 02/10.
