I booked a J redemption flight last nov Syd/Sin/Fco return for Aug/Sep this year, the Rome leg home has been wait listed all this time and not come up. I rang last week to see if there were any options like doing one leg in Y, no it's full too, can I book three legs and buy a one way ticket Fco/Sin to cover the leg? Or does anyone have any other options I might consider, I have my paid seat reserved all the way, hubby is on the redemption seat and says he doesn't care if he does the leg in Y and perhaps I could points upgrade him.

You can make hubby 3 tix:

One way redemption SYD/SIN/FCO.

Then buy a leg FCO/SIN

Then have a redemption SIN/SYD

For that return leg you would need to do the numbers for miles and dollars involved. As you suggest it might be more economical to then upgrade him on that final sector. Remember that it will have to be a fare that will allow KF upgrade.

Have you asked about the possibly of a *A redemption? Options may exist with Thai all the way back to SYD. Maybe LH *A redemption in J would have hubby go FCO/FRA/SIN and then be joining you in J on the final sector.

Also, is MXP a viable option for hubby? A train ride or shuttle might be good for him.

Please excuse my ignorance Alby, what is an A* redemption?

And what is MXP please?
I'm getting better with the ff lingo, but still have a way to go.
*A, in this context a redemption on Star Alliance carriers.

MXP is the airport code for Milan in Italy.

Star Alliance Redemption. This page of the SQ website http://www.singaporeair.com/SAA-flow.form?execution=e2s1 shows the partner airlines on which SQ can help you travel. The award charts are linked on this page. Basically the number of miles required for Europe - Aust on a Star Alliance partner redemption is about the same as a Krisflyer redemption but without the option to save 15% online. Redemption has to be done over the telephone. Using the *A redemption means that you might be able to get award availability on a Thai Airways or Lufthansa.

MXP is Malpensa airport. SQ also fly from Malpensa which is a train ride out of Milan. I was thinking that might be an alternate point of departure.

Just a few alternatives.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. As an aside, it is possible to fly from Milan Bergamo Airport to Groningen (Eelde) return for around 34 Euro. This is an alternative for those wanting to bypass Amsterdam if travelling to the north of The Netherlands.

Alby, thanks for the tips, got the ticket sorted today. Spent another hour on the phone but the lass was very very helpful. Ok you get the 15% discount on return bookings, so did the booking Syd - Sin on one redemption, then we had a problem because when they removed the third confirmed leg then I couldn't book it seperately, so she had to go back and forth to try to make sure I didn't loose that leg, in the end she got the three legs under one ticket, and I think did a little creativeness with the points as well, then when I got home I booked his Y seat which I hope I can upgrade on points, was lucky I did this now, there were about 8 Y seats left on the whole plane. Thanks everyone, can sleep a little better now knowing at least we will be on the same plane, and hubby said if he gets stuck in Y I can just wander back and visit him with a scotch regularly, I even booked him the special fish meal hoping it will be nicer than the usual Y food just in case since he's missing out on book the cook as well.

Hi Alby - I'm also trying to find SQ J awards to EU at the moment, but struggling to make it work, so I was interested to see this post, as I was under the impression *A awards using SQ miles were way more expensive than SQ awards. Am I missing something on the reward charts? My reading is that a *A J round trip award from AUS-Europe is 190,000 miles. By comparison, an SQ Saver J award from AUS to AMS, CPH or FCO is 160,000, which after the discount is just 136,000 miles. I'd be delighted if you could tell me I've misunderstood something though.

you have made a good discovery, this is what I found:

If I search SYD-LHR on Krisflyer it is 190,000 for return J.
If I search SYD-FCO (or AMS) on Krisflyer it is 160,000 for return J.

If I look at the Partner Redemption Table it shows South West Pacific to Europe as 190,000 for return J.

Those 160,000 redemptions look like they are on the 777-200 operated destinations. It looks like they have applied some differential pricing to get people redeeming on these routes. Since they introduced more J Savers on 777ER & A380 I haven't seen a reason to redeem on those 777-200 routes.

In the content of the OP this would make it more miles to redeem out of MXP than out of FCO.

Thanks Alby, I was confused about why the SQ points required are be lower for certain routes, but your explanation makes sense. I have a follow up question but it's getting OT so I'll start a new thread. If you have any advice on it I'd appreciate it.

It is quite difficult now to book a J Saver SIN-AMS as I have found, even changing my travel dates by more than 3 months to October has proved ineffective. That aside I believe the 777 a/c in use SIN-AMS have now been refitted with the A380 style seating. Also SIN-MUC also utilise the upgrade interior, and this route is a stop-over continuing onto Manchester (MAN). ie. SIN-MUC-MAN
