Not sure if this is a recent change (I suspect it to be) but if you enter bookings such as DOH-CBR into oneworld’s website, you get a QR flight and then a VA connecting flight.

QF connecting flights don’t show up anymore for these itineraries. It’s all VA QR codeshare flights, despite QF being a founding member of the oneworld airline alliance.

I understand that QR have a partnership with VA and they’re free to preference/show only VA on their website. But on the oneworld website I would have expected Qantas. Not sure if old mate Akbar’s recent tenture as OW Chairman has anything to do with this but it’s quite low of oneworld to sideline a founding member in favour of an unaffiliated rival competitor.

It’s just showing what’s loaded by each airline. In this case, QR has domestic connections on VA operated flights with a QR codeshare. The OW website search is limited better to check direct (if not Google flights etc).

It’s a strange one as I’ve noticed over the last couple of weeks that on QR’s website they seem to have removed QF options off on a couple of routes in preference for VA. HBA for instance seems to have the odd JQ offering but next to no QF ones. CBR seems far worse with QR putting you those awful Link flights out of SYD even if travelling in J.

One would wonder whether this violates a few rules of them being in oneworld. It wouldn’t be ridiculous to assume that there’s a rule that oneworld members must be shown on bookings for onward connections even if airlines have partnerships with non-OW airlines.

I think the only way to get QF connections from QR is through QF monopoly airports such as TMW or BXG where QR don’t have a choice but to put people on QF.

Other routes such as ASP and DRW for an even split of VA/QF. Who knows what’s going on behind the scenes.

QR avoiding giving revenue to QF... who would have thought after QF fought so hard (and won) to not allow additional QR flights to Australia! 😅
Yep, they can do that cough as much as they want on their website. What’s not on is QR instructing oneworld to sideline a founding member of that alliance in favour of its rival.

QR is still a relatively novice and childish member of oneworld. They joined in 2014, two years after the QF-EK partnership commenced so they knew full well that Australia was going to be a problem for them if they join OW. They acted like a child in 2018 threatening to leave because of QF’s “behaviour” only to end up controlling the alliance 2 years later and come up with these thinly-veiled backstabs aimed at QF.

If they don’t like OW, they could and should leave.

Who would have imagined an era where oneworld displays Virgin Australia flights on QF routes, and no QF flights?

I’m not sure if people would be happy if SkyTeam displays AA fights, or Star Alliance displays JAL flights but it’s now the reality with QF being replaced with VA on oneworld.

I don't know if they are instructing oneWorld anything, it's a QR codeshare that is being offered.
If you search Perth - Dubai you'll get a Qantas codeshare on Emirates offered up.

Maybe they like OW but hate QF. Siblings don’t always get along.
Many other routes have QF offered it just seems that for one reason or another CBR isn’t in the mix and there might be many reasons for that

What else can you expect on this route though? The QF-EK codeshare is the most sensible option since it’s nonstop and a oneworld codeshare.

If they suggest PER-DOH-DXB on QR then it would clearly vindicate that QR has changed the entire OW booking system for Australians in their favour! They need to keep these changes gradual and thinly-veiled so nobody can notice!

I think you’ll find it’s the fact that QF don’t have a DOH-Australia flight (even codeshare unless with BA via LHR or something) hence not offering a seamless OW-metal trip. QR obviously do offer the direct flight from DOH and they have codeshare flights loaded into system that utilise VA. Not really OW’s fault, they are just displaying the options given to them. If you put in two separate bookings DOH-SYD, SYD-CBR I’m sure you’ll get QF flights on the connecting leg (if that important).

hence not offering a seamless OW-metal trip.
How? Is flying DOH-SYD on QR and then SYD-CBR on QF not a seamless OW-metal trip? It sounds like a seamless OW-metal trip to me, it’s just that Qatar have probably instructed/influenced/paid OW to display VA flights instead of QF when it comes to connections.

QR codeshares with VA, not Qantas. It’s a partnership between those airlines.

If you look for a flight between DOH-CBR you’ll end up likely on QR which codeshares with VA. It’s that simple.

There is no partnership or codeshare with QF. OW is an alliance, not a codeshare or partnership arrangement. It based on recognition of the respective frequent flyer programs, not flights operated.

EK is a major competitor to BA too so similar applies

Is QR forcing QF out of OW (to be replaced by VA-with Avios as currency) completely impossible? 😉

Jokes aside I wouldn’t rule it out. QR and their owner, the State of Qatar, can bribe their way into anything so yes it’s definitely possible.

They do indeed have the potential to relocate the OW HQ from Dallas to Doha, increase their stakes in BA and CX, buy stakes in AA and AY, bully QF out and install VA as a oneworld ‘connect’ member before buying a stake in VA. The velvet and rosy monster will do that if they really want.

QANTAS then to join Star Alliance?

It’s in Qantas’ best interests that they remain in oneworld - and they will. But we should not underestimate the power and influence of QR. At the end of the day, the decision QR made to cosy up with VA is deeply provocative and problematic and has the potential to rupture the whole oneworld alliance presence in Australia/Pacific with flow-on effects elsewhere. It also creates a complex dilemma for QF FFs in Australia who use the old QF-QR benefits which are now at risk. Just wait until QF FFs are refused entry into QR lounges even though on paper it’s allowed. Just wait until the QF points earned on QR flights are lower than that of JQ. If this is what QR wants to do, they should be shown the exit from oneworld, and not let the door hit them on the way out.
