Oneworld separate ticket interline changes

When I was checking in with AA in SFO and connecting to QF 12 at LAX on sep tickets the check staff through checked my bags all the way to MEL. This was in sept 2016. So you may get lucky. I didn't even really ask as by the time I was going to bring it up she was already in the process of doing it.

I had the same experience at about that time, but it was only because I had booked all flights prior to the policy change.

I wouldn't be counting on it now.

Can anyone comment on checking in on a AA domestic flight and then connecting onto QF (DFW) on separate tickets. Are they likely to check the bags through for me?

I was checked through with SWMBO and our 6 month old in October. We flew IAD-xDFW-SYD on two tickets (AA dom F / QF int J).

Both tickets were booked well in advance of the changes, and I had raised concerns with QF, including passing a note to my corporate account rep (corporate client, but this was personal travel), and so possible they tweaked or linked the PNRs to make it happen. Nothing was visible to this effect though on either booking.

Hope it works out for you!

Cheers,
Matt.

Does anyone have any experience with QR in DOH re-tagging bags and sending them on their way? I've got two QR-QR (award to revenue and revenue to award) and one QR-EK (revenue to award) flights coming up but on separate reservations. If I can't through-check or have them re-tagged I think I'm going to be up for a fair bit in unnecessary visas.

Tried this last month JFK>LAX (AA) LAX>SYD (QF). Both AA and QF tickets were booked separately in March 2016, many months before the interline changes. AA agent refused to through check the bags, citing several reasons including that the 'computer' stated that the policy changed in 2014 so had been in place for a few years already.

Yup, as expected they wouldn't check it through. Such a PITA. Need to collect the bag at DFW, then wait the the inter-terminal bus and re-check. The whole thing add another 45 minutes I estimated.

I really don't understand the logic either for not doing it. It surely can't be saving them any money.

Been stated here a few times now the core issue isn't the bag but the actual through checking. If first airline through checks you and then delays you they are responsible for down stream connections.

When you buy a through ticket part of the price is an 'insurance' of sorts, to cover the costs of such rechecking if delayed. You go outside this and buy your tickets cheaper as not connecting and expect them to through check, you get the fiscal benefit, they get the risk.

What are the brains trust thoughts on the following.
CX SYD to HKG, 18 hour layover, BA HKG to LHR, 3 hour layover & BA LHR to BCN.

CX is a single PNR award ticket. BA flights are both on the same PNR separate to CX flight.

Given CX's changes to allow through check do you think they will check me all the way through to BCN?
OR do you think given the long layover it wont work out (wont get boarding passes for BA flights) or isnt advisable due to chances or lost luggage?

I assume even if they dont through check me i could just get a day return HK Airport Express and do in town checkin anyway (assuming i cant checkin at HKG when i land).
Also my thinking is that if you can do in town checkin in the morning for an evening flight the changes of the bag getting lost in the 18 hour layover if it was through checked must be low.

CX allows checkin from 24 hours before departure, so in the event they can't check your bags through you can simply pick them up, head up stairs and check them in.

Bags with ultra long layovers are sent to a separate holding bay. The risk of being forgotten is probably small, but still a risk. You can always check at the gate (hand over your bag tags) and ask them to confirm the bags have been loaded. That's not a guarantee, but CX is usually pretty good with that.

Yep definitely check bag is loaded when i get back to the airport.

My onward flights are with BA. Would they also allow checkin 18 hours before in HKG? or checkin 28 hours before in SYD when i checkin with CX?

Except as pointed out earlier in this thread, AA would still have been responsible if I had missed my next flight on a OW airline due to my AA flight being delayed. So that pretty much negates the above reasoning.

Are you taking the Airport Express into town? If yes, you can drop your bag at the Kowloon or city checkin for your BA flight.

Yep that is the backup plan if i cant / should do through checkin per my earlier post.

Oh sorry. I forgot you were flying BA out of HKG. I don't believe BA offer that at HKG.

Not if on separate bookings. Separate bookings you are on your own pretty much.

QR to through-check bags on separate PNRs

Didn't see this elsewhere so apologies if posted earlier.

Some good news as the awful oneworld baggage policy is slowly being dismantled. QR to through-check on separate PNRs subject to minimum connection time from 1 March: https://www.ausbt.com.au/qatar-airways-ditches-oneworld-s-restrictive-baggage-rules

It appears that the oneworld policies are now as follows:
Will through check (any oneworld airline): CX, JL, MH, QR, UL
Will through check (only if one ticket is an award): AA, QF
Will through check (own airline flights only): AY
No through check under any circumstances: BA, IB, LA
Unknown: AB, RJ, S7

Re: QR to through-check bags on separate PNRs

I have to admit most of the time I'm on a single PNR when flying via the middle east as it's not typically my destination. If flying QR to Doha then I'm flying QR out of Doha also.

Good to see them ditching that rule though. I think if you arrive at the airport and the departing flight is on time and can connect easily to onward flight I can't see any reason not to through check.

Re: QR to through-check bags on separate PNRs

Good to see another oneworld airline has come to realise how ridiculous this new policy is. Hoping more will follow the lead...
