Does anyone have advice from previous experiences on how the system automatically recognises an OWA itinerary?

Bit concerned as I have to book flights out of order from what I will be flying due to flights opening up at different times through different airlines - mostly AA being later than others.

Will I need the extra points to effectively book each flight individually until the last flight is booked and meets all OWA criteria then it reverts to 318k points?

If I need to have the points for each flight it will be around 500k which I don't have.

My Itinerary, (order of booking), dates and airlines are below:

MEL - NRT - FRA - LCY. (1 Booked) 8 Nov 23 - JL and BA
MAD - JFK. (2) 26 Dec 23 - IB
JFK - CUN. (5) 31 Dec 23 - AA
CUN - LAX. (6) 11 Jan 24 - AA
LAX - KIX. (3) 18 Jan 24- JL
NRT - MEL. (4) 25 Jan 24 - JL
If I’m reading the information that you’ve provided correctly, your existing booking #1 on JL and BA has already brought your itinerary into the OWA realm.
So as long as you don’t break any rules with any future changes, it should max out at the magic 318k.

It’s just a computer program. It maxes out at 318K as long as the itinerary is within the rules. I book when i see availability, and flights may be booked in any order.

Nothing to be too concerned about. :)

Hi everyone, I just received a flight change notification by email in relation to a OWCA I have booked to commence in April 2023. The only BA flight has come forward by 5 mins, no big deal as it has no impact to other flights. Should I accept the change by clicking the "Review and Accept" button in the email?

I use JL, QF, UL, AY and CX airlines in the itinerary. Please let me know if you require more information to assist.Thank you.

BTW the CMT email notification came ~30 mins before receiving the email from Qantas :)

I may be wrong but I did not think a minor time change like this needed reticketing.
Many Qantas passengers whose flights were altered by five minutes last year may beg to disagree. The point being that nothing is 100% certain and it is better to check now than to later wish you had done so.

I had 2 minor time changes recently as JAL seemed to be tinkering with their schedules and both were reticketed. Qantas sent the updated itineraries with the new e-ticket number within minutes of me accepting the changes.

I agree totally but just to get the facts straight, I have had to contact QFF re a small change like the above and the agent has said that reticketing was not needed.
But best to be safe and sure !

Hey Jimmy, so if you book legs one by one at different dates/times, how does the system know it's part of the same itinerary?

Not Jimmy, but your comment threw up a big red flag to me so I'm replying. You MUST book the legs on the same booking reference or PNR. That is how the system knows it is the same itinerary. You cannot book legs separately, on different PNRs, and then link/merge them into the one itinerary.

Correct, you have to phone up and say you’d like to add flights to an existing booking.

And… when you call, don’t refer to your booking as a OWCA or anything like it. Just say that you want to make a change to the itinerary. Many of the call centre staff seem as if they don’t know of or don’t fully understand the OWCA concept; so best not to confuse them…

and pay the 5k points change fee, per pax per call (can add multiple flights on one call for one change fee per pax, if that works out)
I haven't been charged the change fee on a business OWA. I thought the change fee only applied to economy bookings or have I just been lucky?
