"oneworld" award (132.4K/249.6K/318K/455K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi guys,

Just wondering about the seating on a 140k economy round the world trip. Do I have to pay extra to select seats in advance? For some reason a couple of my legs have flights already selected for me, but not others, e.g. Qantas

When I try and select a seat on Qantas it says an additional $30 is required. Is this correct?

Thanks

Yes, unfortunately you don't get to choose seats on an award until check-in if you're flying in Y - same thing applies if you are on a paid ticket where you only get to select your seats if you stump up some extra cash. If on a J or F award you get to select seats (on most airlines) for free as soon as you want to.

I've only ever done J awards so not sure if this trick applies to Y awards but if I can't select seats for a particular leg I go to the QR website and log in to MMB with my QF booking number. From there I can usually select seats on any of the flights on my itinerary (you don't even need to have any flights on QR). Doesn't work with BA though because you have to pay to pre-select seats even in J with them (selection is free at check-in). If there's a change of aircraft the seat selections usually disappear so you need to check your booking periodically.

Wow. Very interesting.

Makes it tough for plenty of passengers outside of the golden triangle to get to Sydney or Melbourne on the same calendar day in order to take a number of overseas flights, including SYD-JNB.

Another one of Qantas' down sides - they are very Sydney centric.

And how is this different to most other national carriers? NZ is a nearby example - they are very Auckland centric. JL is rather Tokyo centric, BA is rather London centric, IB is rather Madrid centric, and so forth.

I think you need to live west of the Blue Mountains to understand..

Thanks vetrade!!

Just wondering, the consultant did ask me about seat selection over the phone for a particular leg a while ago (I forgot which), but there does seem to be seats actually booked for me seemingly for no charge on a Qatar Airways flight, and also on some of my Air Berlin legs. Is that normal? (The other flights are with Qantas and LAN)

Jumping on the seat selection bandwagon, has anyone had experience selecting seats for Iberia J JFK-MAD? I've tried logging into the website, but seat selection is blocked off to me. Have managed to select seats fine on CX and Air Berlin.

What website are you trying - Iberia's or Qatar's? Even though the QF booking number will get you in to MMB in Iberia's website it won't let you select seats. Try doing it through the QR website.

Seats are automatically allocated for some airlines - if they are you should be able to change them if you've checked out the seat maps and there's somewhere else you'd like to sit

Trying to do that...doesn't seem to come up with seat maps only preference for Windows or Aisle. Really confusing. I managed to select or be allocated seats for every leg except for the initial Qantas from Sydney to Johannesburg free of charge for some reason. Also an AirBerlin flight from Berlin to New York (although the other three legs on AB got seats).

I think I'll probably just leave it and hope those seats are good :)

Thanks again, for helping a newbie

Sorry - a bit of confusion here - you can check out the seat maps at seatguru.com or seatexpert.com to get info on which ones are rated best. Then in MMB in QR you go to seat selection and see if you can get the ones you want.

Thanks vetrade. I had no idea that partner airline seats could be selected from QR. All sorted now (bassinet requests in for 4 x CX flights - lets hope we get lucky!).

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi all,

I've booked an award ticket that already has the maximum number of stopovers.

Qatar changed the departure time of one of my flights, and now I have an extra stopover. Since I'm not the one that is breaking the stopover rules, will this affect me in any way? What happens if I decide to change the already ticketed itinerary, will I have to drop one stopover?

Also, according to the new ticket, I have only 55 minutes connecting from CPH to BKK through DOH. Will that be enough?

Many thanks!

Iberia has a different reservation system and there is a different PNR/reloc associated. I've found a neat trick is to pull up your itinerary in BA then do seat selection which nicely transports you into the Iberia site with their own booking reference. I was able to select seats on JFK-MAD-BCN and MAD-FCO flights that way.

QR is kinda weird. I have a booking for two pax, but somehow my partner's booking has both my FF number and hers, so it won't allow seat selection. This is probably because it was my points that bought the ticket. I did have this fixed in the past but can't for the life of me remember how. I may have called QF or QR or used any number of other OW websites but can't for the life of me remember.

Made some changes Wednesday evening to our OW award flight booking departing this Saturday. Still hasn't been ticketed 24 hrs from doing the changes over the phone. Should I be worried? Seems like they're cutting it fine and I don't want to lose the partner award seats last minute because they weren't ticketed.

They can take a while. Mine took about 72 hours. As long as you had an original ticket you should be fine.

My ticket was impacted by the QR changes too, but I just rang Qantas and moved to an earlier flight (still keeping my flight as a transit, albeit a long one)... so my booking is all fine.

Doha minimum connection time for QR flights is 45 mins. So your CPH to BKK is fine.

More time in CPH, no lounging in DOH for me :)

I need all the luck i can get tomorrow.

Flights between SFO -SYD are only a few times per week.

Last week we missed the cut (2 people, only 1 available). If we miss this opportunity, it will be home in cattle class (together), or maby business + premium.

re: "oneworld" award (140K/280K/420K) Planning - The Definitive Thread

Hi all. I apologise if this has been covered before (I've trawled back, and haven't found anything so far) - what is the situation with the rules if a connection is missed if we can't make our flight in time (as opposed to not showing up for it) - is there any differentiation? I'm starting to get a bit concerned about our Iberia MAD-BCN leg, as we will only have 1.5 hours after disembarking from our Iberia JFK-MAD flight in a separate terminal, and need to factor in some logistical challenges (dealing with oversized luggage, baby etc). If there is a possibility of the rest of our trip being 'voided' due to not showing up for MAD-BCN, I'm inclined to shift that flight our by another hour or so (even though the idea of needing to re-ticket again gives me the heebie jeebies - we leave Thursday morning).

You'll be fine. Not sure what you mean by separate terminal though, Iberia are located in T4 at Madrid - sure it has a main section and a satellite but they're connected. If the flight from JFK is late the airline will rebook you onto a subsequent flight.

Do European ports do the Aussie/US/etc thing of inspecting baggage at the first port of entry into a country? I thought they were less fussy and that bags would be checked all the way through to BCN in this case without needing to be touched by the pax.
