Pity as PE is an option on non OWA awards.

Yes, it's not helpful, but if my memory is correct someone recently said they were in Y on a J award on one of those Sth American flights and got upgraded to PE on the day - no J apparently.

I have heard that as well.
I wonder if that is because being on a OWA J award , the pax is booked into a different economy award class .
or
is it because the pax was originally in J , aircraft configuration changed and the airline noted the original booking class ( ie business) and recognised that he should be in PE.
There is something very inscrutable about booking classes.

G'day all, haven't read the entire thread but saw the comments regarding y/pe/j sectors within South America. As LAN is the only local One World player (LATAM now), you are restricted by their aircraft. Flights on 767's and A340's have Y and J seating, but they also fly a lot of international (intra-South America) routes using narrow bodies with only Y and PE on offer. This could explain these difficulties?

Edit: and y and J on their magnificent 787's too now :)

I was wondering if there was a process of requesting PE award seats on an individual sector if traveling on a business OWA.
If not, I wondered if there was a different economy booking class, if on a J award, but only Y and PE available
If so,was this recognisable by the airline that then allowed them to note the passenger was on a business award and was "entitled" to a PE seat if an award one was available.

Hi everyone,

Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I am in the early stages of putting a RTW trip together for myself plus partner. Economy with 140k is the intention - currently we have 260k points so just waiting on a CC application to come through to hopefully bump us past the 280k mark.

I understand I can have a maximum of 16 segments and 5 stops. If am making my own way between two destinations, do these two combine to count as one stop (but two segments)? This is how I have interpreted previous posts, but appreciate I could be entirely wrong at this stage!

The dates of travel are May 2016 for Sydney departure, and the flights on these dates are currently available to book. However, as this is a long trip, the last legs of the journey are not yet available to book as they are > 1 year away from now. Does this mean I have to wait until my final flight is available so I can book all flights together? Or is it possible to book segments as they come available? Of course I am concerned about lack of availability if it is not possible to book as segments become available.

Not really sure that I understand your question. Each airline has a single particular designation for their award seats in any particular class - e.g. QF Y awards are "X", PE is "Z" and business is "U" (there's no difference between a standard classic award and a OW RTW award) whereas AA's mileSAAver awards, for example, are "T" for Y class and "U" for business etc. etc. If you were on a J award ticket with QF but were booking a Y seat you would be booked into "X" - there's no other booking class for Y.

It would have been obvious to the airline that the pax was on a J award. I don't think "entitlement" would come into it - probably it was just that the flight had spare PE seats and staff decided to upgrade them on the day.

Hopefully the points for your new CC come through before you need to book your flights.

16 segments but only 5 stopovers, Becky. If you take a land leg your stopover city is designated as the city you land in and the city you depart from doesn't count. The distance between the 2 cities is included in your maximum allowable distance travelled of 35,000 miles though. One great benefit of having a land leg (or even a separate paid flight) is that you can effectively stop in more than 5 cities - e.g on our last OW award trip we stopped in 8 cities but because we bought separate tickets for some of our short sectors we were still within the rules. E.g we flew Westjet between YVR and YYC and Mango between JNB and CPT etc.

Nearly everyone finds they need to book flights as they become available. If you wait too long you may miss out so I'd be locking in your first flight(s) ASAP. Can book the first flight(s) on line then any changes or additions after that need to be over the phone which incurs a change fee and points for each pax.

No, you don't need all the points at the start. The first flights will be booked as a standard classic award (at whatever points cost that would be). When you have passed 140K points spend the booking will automatically convert to a OW award and the points are capped from there. I should have mentioned that it's important that when you add flights you must add them to your existing booking - you can't book several flights separately and then combine them into one.

All your booking should be through Qantas - you don't use the OW website to book any awards. On the QF website you login to your account and then select "Multi city" if you are booking more than 1 segment and also tick the box at the bottom for "classic awards". If only booking one flight to start with you can just select it as a one way flight.

There is no 16 segment rule for the oneworld distance based award. That applies to a xONEx, a revenue fare. ie. not what this thread is about.

14.5 Classic Flight Rewards - oneworld Classic Flight Reward booking conditions
14.5.1 A oneworld Classic Flight Reward is a Classic Flight Reward Itinerary that includes travel on at least two oneworld Alliance Airlines other than Qantas and does not include any travel on any airline that is not a oneworld Alliance Airline.
14.5.2 Classic Flight Rewards using the oneworld Classic Flight Reward table must be no more than a distance of 56,315 kilometres (35,000 miles). Longer journeys must be broken into separate Itineraries.
14.5.3 A one way oneworld Classic Flight Reward Itinerary will be charged as a return Itinerary. oneworld Classic Flight Reward Itineraries finishing in a port other than the port of origin must include the distance to return directly to the port of origin when calculating the number of Points required to redeem the Flight Reward and the maximum distance for the Itinerary.
14.5.4 The following Stopover conditions apply to oneworld Classic Flight Rewards:
(a) up to five free Stopovers are permitted;
(b) additional Stopovers are not permitted;
(c) only one Stopover is permitted in any one city in the Itinerary; and
(d) only two Transfers may be taken at any one city in the Itinerary.
14.5.5 Surface Segments are permitted as part of oneworld Classic Flight Reward Itineraries, but the distance between the disembarkation point and the next embarkation point will be included in the Reward Point zone calculation for that Itinerary.
14.5.6 Where mixed-class travel is booked in a oneworld Classic Flight Reward, the whole Itinerary will be calculated using the Points level for the highest class booked.

Incorrect. The 16 segment maximum is imposed by IATA (I don't recall the exact resolution number).

13.2.1 The number of Qantas Points required to redeem a Reward Flight, and the Fare Conditions applicable to that Reward Flight, may be different depending on the type of Reward Flight chosen (ie Classic Flight Reward or Points Plus Pay - Flight). It is recommended that Members consider the Fare Conditions for each Reward Flight type before making a booking.
13.2.2 Bookings for Reward Flights will not be considered accepted until the required Qantas Points have been redeemed and any required payment made by Accepted Payment Card (including authorisation by the merchant bank or other form of payment administrator).
13.2.3 All Reward Flight bookings made or completed by telephone or in person will incur an Award Assistance Fee, per passenger occupying a seat (see the Fee Schedule).
13.2.4 A Reward Flight Itinerary must contain no more than 16 Segments (including any Surface Segments).


I think the reasoning is two fold:
1) You have to draw the line somewhere, and
2) It may be a legacy from the days of paper tickets and having to get a staple through the lot or something... maybe,

And so long as you meet the other requirements of the OWA ticket, such as two non-Qantas airlines on the ticket.

Also, don't forget, it doesn't have to be RTW!

Been meaning to put his up before I left…anyway, have just come back from a 3 month holiday using a 280k J award for myself and my partner. My legs were:

BNE-xSYD-DXB (QF) - end April ‘15
DXB-xAMM-IST (RJ)
(lots of internal flights/trains in Europe)
MAD-GIG (IB)
GRU-JFK (JJ)
JFK-NRT (JL)
NRT-BNE (QF) - early Aug ‘15

Pretty much had to book the BNE-DXB flight and the JFK-NRT flight the moment the seats were released. I found the JAL website very useful for working out the timing of the seat release (about 330 days out and at 11am Qld time). The rest of the flights had good availability with no real worries about booking within a couple months of departure.

Taxes and fees were about $2.2k. 560k points plus one lot of change fees (ie $7k). A nice QF phone operator comp’d me one lot of change fees.

The JL J in a B777 was probably the sweetest of the trip. Really loved it. Actually all the J products were really quite good, even got the upgraded QF A330 coming home.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for their contributions to this site, it really helped me organise this booking. Might try for F next time ;)
