One world becoming less relevant

Qantas
LT Silver
Was boarding today, haven’t flown Qantas regularly for a long time but now travelling with them about twice a week domestically. So as I’ve been doing last few months I enter the J loungue by showing my QF boarding pass (lowly life silver) and one world WP online card, no issues in Sydney, Perth, Brisbane etc, same when using priority boarding. Today got I got a spray from an ancient dragon , saying One World doesn’t mean anything and she only goes by boarding zone, so I went to the service desk and told them and they let me board, but it looks like they removed my QFFf number from the flight to make it work, so I’ll have to beg online for my SC.. Another sad reminder that nothing short of private jet ownership ensures any basic customer service in the skies these days.

The way the boarding scanners work, is going by the group printed on your BP, they won't let you board if your groups not up yet. So it makes sense that if your OWE status isn't the one associated with the flight, you wouldn't be able to board with the group - computer will say no.

The boarding attendant could've had a better attitude towards it though.

This change has happened for a while. If you don't have the right boarding group on your boarding pass then the computer will deny you.

This is different to lounge access.

I'm confused. Are you a Qantas Lifetime Silver AND have oneworld Emerald status with another carrier? In which case , which program was used on the boarding pass? If you had your QFF Program for the boarding pass then yes, you're treated as a silver status passenger.

No they'll be credited to the oneworld program you ended up using on your boarding pass to get the oneworld privileges. You can't earn to one program while receiving benefits from another, Qantas (and most airlines) don't work that way.

I think nothing wrong was done here. If you want your oneworld privileges applied to the flight, then you have to use the program that entitles you to those benefits.

Nothing on the Qantas or one world website says you can’t receive benefits for one world if you don’t have it on a boarding pass. I have done this several times before and they just did a manual override. That applies to the Qantas-Emirates arrangement etc, which is not one world. If they’re going to change your FF as an uncessary work around this should be explained.

You think just flashing a card should entitle you to benefits especially boarding?
It need to be verified by adding it on to you booking, then your boarding group would be changed to what you want.

A lengthy article on 'The Australian' website has just popped up (to be in print tomorrow) that claims OneWorld is better than Star Alliance in some respects, given the former has Emerald status as a possibility.

I know proving membership works because it says so in the rules and it has been accepted by QF staff , and worked on other airlines when I was travelling around the world in similar circumstances (except I used to be QF platinum back then and flew AA, LAN, Iberia etc).

Mmm, Oneworld doesn’t have a base in South America anymore, but I suppose they still cover the more common routes. I’d keep up my Qatar platinum status if the Chairman’s Lounge wasn’t such an effective tool for protecting Qantas from competition…

OP is just venting from what I can tell, oneworld is doing pretty great at the moment. If oneworld is not relevant, then I have no idea how we should describe *a and skyteam.

I think it's hit and miss.

It's mostly worked for me but not always! And that was with other airlines.

Simply, if your FF membership that you wish to use for status benefits is not in your booking, it can cause issues in some situations.

I suppose a better system needs to be invented when booking:

1. You nominate a FF membership that you wish to use for status benefits.
2. You also nominate a FF membership that you wish to use for earning.

Yup that would be good, or just changes the rules to keep the dragons happy. But it’s often in the airlines interest to keep people in the network when it costs very little.

Was the staff member a “dragon” just because you didn’t get your own way or for some other reason?

Also, still interested in the answer to this:

What boarding group was on your BP and what group were they boarding?

Where have you used One World recently?
I was in the pier and wing lounges at HKG on Monday this week. Selected free extra legroom seats on my flight too thanks to OWS status. Great perk since J for this daytime flight would've been overkill @ only 7 hours.

Editing to add that cathay also enforced priority boarding at my leg into HKG from CAN, which meant I skipped a huge queue there and was able to grab an overhead bin for my carry on which isn't a guarantee since the Chinese seem to without fail overfill the entire cabins overhead storage. If you attach your FFP # to your bookings all oneworld airlines tend to take care of you.

Things have changed.

Travellers complained for years about QF priority not working and gate lice et al. QF have now automated the process and 1. Take it out of the hands of gate staff & 2. Provide an effective mechanism that customers can understand (as used by US carriers and others).

From what I have read and observed, largely the rules based changes create more certainty and have been welcomed by both elites and non-elites.

There was another thread on this topic recently. Whether you only get benefits from what’s printed on your boarding pass or whether you use your elite status in one world through another carrier for other benefits.

I recall that it was pointed out that the OW rules actually say the latter, but it was predicted that OneWorld rules would change.
