Not sure where to post this but looking for out of the box ideas.

A friend lives near Newcastle in the UK. Her husband died suddenly and she's just recovering from cancer so she's sold her house and wants to come back to her family in Adelaide. She's looking for a J one way flight which is going to be horrendously expensive. She's not really well enough to do circuitous routings and not in the mindset to look at getting points.

The ideal would be directly into Adelaide if possible

If anyone has some suggestions I'd love to hear them

TIA

QR comes immediately to mind. Fly out of both Glasgow and Manchester to DOH, connection (don't know how good) straight through to Adelaide.

The only cheap way is through use of points. One ways are almost as expensive as return journeys.

It might be cheaper to price a return ticket with a very long return date, and then once she's here and is certain she wont return cancel the return. Might even get some money back. At the worst it will probably be cheaper and easier to book than a one way ticket.

How soon is she looking to travel? Is 2 stops okay? TK are selling MAN-IST-KUL-ADL with the last leg on MH for ~£2,559, which isn't cheap but it's about the same as half a return
If doing this, booking TK1992/4/6 from MAN might be preferable as they are often (but not always!) on a 777/330 instead of 321 for the 4 hours to Turkey. EDI/BHX is pretty much always narrowbody. I can't see any better prices from LHR so the only reason to go from there would be to have just one stop, but MH would still be 3.3k GBP and other carriers 4.5k+.

I see Swiss/Singapore for ~3.1k from MAN also. MAN-ZRH-SIN-ADL.

I think it's going to be at least 6-8 weeks. The selling of houses in the UK is not as straightforward as here. A contract just seems to be an arbitrary document.

That looks like a really good deal.

Thanks to others too for their info and input. It's much appreciated.

I'll get back to her and let her know there are some options and when she's ready to book I might come back here for more current advice.
