Just planning some travel at the moment and having a bit of trouble getting home!

I need to fly Calgary (YYC) to Buenos Aires (EZE) in early Jan '11 then get home to Australia from Argentina mid Feb 2011. I'd prefer to fly Oneworld if I'm paying.

The best fares I've found from Calgary to Buenos Aires are approx $900 to $1100 rtn (Mexicana via Mexico City or LAN via LAX, LIM or Continental via IAH). I don't think there are "one way" fares available on this route.

From EZE back to Australia seems to be the hitch - there isn't any award availability on the QF flight, oneway EZE-SYD is ridiculous, LAN prices something ridiculous for a one way and approx a $2000 fare with Aerolineas (and ditch the return). The long way around with Malaysia Airlines via South Africa and Kuala Lumpur doesn't price as a one way either.

So far, the best option I'm considering uses the LAN YYC-LAX-LIM-EZE-LIM-LAX, ditch the last sector then hop on a V Australia or Air New Zealand flight but would prefer if I could somehow use the QF flight or avoid heading back into the States all together.

Any other suggestions on how to get home?

Have you looked at FJ via NAN.

QF322 (LA801?) has availability in Business on 15 Feb 2011 as a NB. If you don't have enough points, maybe consider buying AA miles or LANPass km? NB, if you're using AAdvantage miles or LANPass km, you can't book the QF codeshare. Likewise if you're using QF points, you have to book the QF codeshare.

GRU-DXB-SYD on Emirates is available as a oneway, but is also 4965.68 BRL ~ 3300 AUD. I think even a return is cheaper... Qatar Airways will fly EZE-GRU-DOH-MEL for around 3000 USD.

Another buyable option, is EZE-SCL-IPC for 950 AUD. Also should be available using QF miles. IPC-PPT is 1260 AUD. Combine that with a Air Tahiti Nui or Air NZ fare to Australia, using AAdvantage miles or cash.

Thanks for those - hadn't considered any of them! The Middle Eastern options sound pretty brutal on travel time but the hop over to Easter Island is something I've always wanted to do! I might check out award availability on those LAN sectors out of Santiago (not too hard to do EZE-SCL overland, Argentine buses are like Business class...)
