I have a cruise that finishes in NYC next September and have been looking for the best options home flying Premium Economy or better, One way flights cost nearly as much as return, its difficult so.

Any suggestions, I can fly in any direction really and do stop overs.

Have you looked at flying via Honolulu? You could fly to HNL on one of the American airlines in their version of First class, then from Honolulu you could fly on to Australia in Jetstar Business class. It's basically premium economy, but the flight from Honolulu is a day flight and prices are usually pretty reasonable. Using this method, you won't pay any penalty for flying one-way.

Booking with points is another way to avoid a penalty for flying one-way, though availability from North America to Australia is often limited. Do you have points with any airlines?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I have heaps of Qantas Points but nothing available at the time I am traveling except the DFW flight and while an option I would prefer to stay North.

Will look at the option you have suggested. I spoke with Qantas and asked why they sometimes make it so difficult to remain loyal, for the same reason flying to the UK at the beginning of this trip I am using Singapore Airlines instead of Qantas.

Consider outside the box: How about returning home via Hong Kong or somewhere else in Asia? Often greater availability.

I don't recommend Jetstar - see recent horror stories including direct flight from Sydney to coughet being diverted to Bangkok:

Second recommendation for HKG. Pick JFK, EWR, BOS or ORD. CX normally doesn't make the one way fares as excessive as other airlines. PEY may not be as flash as what QF would have, but it serves the purpose of getting out of Y at a reasonable price. And PEY will credit at acceptable levels to the QFF program. Just no squiggles.

Happy wandering

And a third recommendation for HKG. I did this in September 2015 actually. I flew one way on points via Chicago and HKG into Perth. This suited me as I could enter Perth as my first Australian port rather than Syd/Mel/Bne if I went with QF. IIRC it was 83k points (economy) for the three flights and taxes were less than $100. I only booked it about 3 weeks ahead, but I did have to leave about a week before I originally wanted to due to availability. I think it may have had something to do with AU school holidays, or it may have been just a coincidence. So if your departure is near the end of September then there might be problems.
