It's potentially a serious issue. The boards of the airports and/or the airlines have a responsibility to protect the health and safety of their employees and if they are being exposed to cigarette smoke while cleaning the toilets, that is a worry, especially the way the law works in NSW.

I find that absoutly horrid, what a total lack of care towards shared facilities. I use the showes, maybe once a month. I can only hope they are cleaned enough so these sort of things don't become a problem.

If I caught anyone doing that, or talking about it. I'd be shouting out "Are you right" and raising it with lounge staff.

Also nice to see the lavatory on a NZ 767 still had the ash tray adjacent to the razor blade disposal slot.

Every aircraft has an ashtray in the lavatory, it is part of the MEL (Minimum Equipment List). No ashtray, no fly.

So if someone does light up, they have somewhere to dispose.

I can't say that I have come across stale cigarette smells in domestic lounges and I am now very sensitive when it comes to cigarette smell as I was a heavy smoker for 25+ years.

There are a lot of ignorant, and arrogant, people out there who just do not care. A friend was flying with a colleague a few years ago when there was a fuss onboard about cigarette smells in the toilet. Apparently the colleague went to have a cigarette in the toilet and the person to go in next noticed and informed the CSM. The colleague was very lucky not to have Federal Police waiting to escort him on arrival into SYD.

I have been on a JQ flight MEL-BKK where the CSM has had to announce twice during a 1 hour period that smoking onboard will not be tolerated.

A young man and lady were later summoned to the forward galley for a chat from the Captain.

No police met the aircraft in BKK, so I assume they let things go.

VA's 777 aircraft do not have no smoking signs. Instead its a "Electronic Devices Permitted" light.

BA 1 has the electronics devices available for use (blue) lights flashing.
Quite annoying if you cop turbulence and try to sleep.. on / off / beep / light etc...
The only complaint I suppose on this flight

Personally, I'm all for a smokers room but without extraction fans. Speeds up the whole process.:mrgreen:

The 'smoking booths' at various EU airports may assist. They have scrubbers in them to "clean" (and I use that word loosely) the air in there.

The booths couldn't hold more than 2-3 people max, and they're all sponsored (unsurprisingly) by tobacco companies.

I saw one young kid there (employee) cleaning the air scrubbers and ash trays. There's a job you couldn't pay me enough to do!

The booths did a good job of containing the smoke though. They didn't smell out the area and you only really noticed it if you walked close to them (say 1-2m max).

New aircraft have an option to do this, although I have still seen 'No Smoking' signs installed as placards or stickers. You can't see them in the dark, but you still can't really say that you didn't know it was against the rules.

Was in SIN a few years ago where they had an outdoor smoking area. I don't smoke however i went into the area as it was a place to get away from the masses (strangely no one was smoking)

SIN still has an outdoor smoking area. Very civilised. They can cater for the smokers and yet not kill innocent bystanders.

What are the rules regarding smoking areas? I know there's a rule for pubs and the like - something like 1/3 of the area can be designated for smoking....

Then there is the 5m from entrances rules, the one about not being near ventilation systems. I wonder if airports have unilateral no smoking rules (except for outside terminals).

Notwithstanding does anyone want to start proposing where good areas for all existing terminals where smoking areas can be constructed / appended, perhaps cheaply? I suppose it should be a glass box rather than an open area, otherwise when it's too hot or it starts raining all the smokers will cry foul over that.

QF's new 738s have fixed (non-lit) no smoking signs. Located in the same place as usual, with the seatbelt sign (lit).

Personally i'd like to see an electronic devices sign - more effective than the announcement IMO.

I remember having to traverse T4 at LHR (I think) which has/or had a smoking area in the middle of the terminal. No walls, just all seated together. The smell within 50 metres was disgusting as was the yellow/brown colours of the walls in the area. As mentioned above having to be seated beside a chronic smoker on a long haul flight was worse than being stuck with someone with chronic flatulence.

I have smelled cigarette and cigar smoke at the SYD international and and domestic terminal showers on a number of occasions. I pity the cleaning staff there who otherwise do an excellent and fast job to make the shower rooms as good as they are.

I was at LAX and saw a woman put numerous nicotine patches on. Someone told me she was seen licking them during the flight to SYD. She must have felt cough but I bet the neighbouring pax were thankful.
