There seems to be a developing trend to smoke in the showers of lounges for many airlines but particularly QF domestic, both QC and J.

Over the past year at least 3 or 4 times now l have gone to take a shower at some point in my journeys to walk into a recently vacated clean shower room only to smell the definate odour of stale or fresh smoke residule.

I have seen ash in the bottom of toilet bowls or on the dry shower floor near the drain and the tip of buts stuck just showing in the top opening of the safe needle dispensers. At one point even still stuck in the plug hloe of the basin.

But the final straw for me was sitting in the Bne j lounge on Sat evening when a well known Bne bussiness identity who was talking on his mobile phone seated behind me was trying to end a phone call quickly when his flight was called.
He was telling the person on the other end with a giggle that he had to "duck into the shower" for a quick "durrie" and had to go. As he got up he was telling the other end he does it "all the time" and that "nobody ever checks" because he stands under the inward air vent. Anyway he said as he walked off "everyone does it" and thats one of the reasons why he "loves the lounge"

Now whilst the lounge was quiet and there weren't many about in ear shot, l was still a bit dumbfounded by his brazeness.

As l sat back and thought about it, things started to fall into place in my head. It certainly matched my experiences over the last couple of years.

Is the lounge showers really a haven for smokers to have an airside last cig before or between flights.
Do smokers really see this as a airside lounge benifit that they can get away with.
I have never seen QF doing anything about it before. Do they even know, and maybe choose not to act.

Am l the only one who has experienced this.

If I'd heard that I would have waited fir him to go into his shower and then reported it to the lounge manager.

Bloody smokers :p

Not condoning the behaviour - but if there was a purpose built airside facility out in the open air and properly secured area for smokers to indulge in their choice then it would certainly cut down on the clutter outside the terminal doors and increased costs of rescreening passengers who have leave the terminal and then come back in.

I reckon an airside cigar bar would make an absolute fortune at any major airport in Australia, unfortunately would be a paperwork nightmare against the nanny-state to get it set up but I am sure that there is a good business case in there somewhere.

Shhhhh you'll wreck my business.

I'm charging Japanese tourists $30 a go to use the showers in the J lounge to smoke. I can get four or five in at the same time.

I remember seeing a smokers room airside in HKG last year...
It was an internal room, with I'm assuming extraction fans to take the smoke outside...

Ideal for those people who are airside, but immigration issues (eg no visa) stops them from going landside \ outside...

What a great idea!
Next time i'm flying from a smoking unfriendly airport, I shall keep this in mind ;)

I have never come across this problem except a couple of times onboard - usually somewhere between SIN/LHR or FRA!

Really?? Am I that niave to think people don't smoke onboard an aircraft?

I expect that people do, and I also expect that they get caught... A plane isn't a very private place, which means the lav's are about the only places one could go where they wouldn't be detected, and then there are smoke detectors (and it's not like smoking doesn't make a decent amount of smoke)

I don't know if smokeless e-ciggies are allowed to be used on board or not... A friend of mine was smoking one the other night inside his house, and yet I couldn't smell any smoke from it... (I only noticed because I saw a glowing red light from near his mouth)

These are allowed. A friend of mine took one in business class to the states recently.

Personally, I'm all for a smokers room but without extraction fans. Speeds up the whole process.

How are they lighting their fa_s? I thought you couldnt take matches or lighters on board?

Thankfully i never have to shower in the DOM QP so never suffered other people's stale fa_ smoke.

I hate the airside smoking lounges in HKG as everytime someone enters or leaves as I am walking I am blasted with their smoke. Similarly sitting next to a smoker is as bad as a bad BO sufferer.

I have actually reported cigarette smoke in the loos on board as well.

This will last until there is evidence of nicotine vapor from the devices being inhaled by those near the "smoker".

As a former consumer of 25-35 B&H Special Filters a day, I suggest that smokers need to grow a pair and just give it up. If I can stop smoking - I declared on many occasions that I would never, ever quit - anyone can.

you can bring matches on to the plane, as long as they are not the 'strike-anywhere' variety

I find this disgusting - and I am a smoker. If I need a smoke - I will leave the lounge - go back outside and then smoke - come through security again. Aaron Bradford can testify as it is what I did when we went on our A330 run. People lile this should have lounge benefits revoked

Humphf! ;)

They actually have little 'car plug lighter thingy-me-jigs' in their on a cord. You plug them into the table, they get hot and glow red and you light your ciggie. Gross, but effective. In effort to avoid touching it again (love the hand sanitiser), and to get optimum smokage during your terminal stay, you just donkey-root from thereon in ;)

There are also several smoking rooms at BKK airside...right next to the prayer rooms

I have not experienced it myself and have used the showers occasionally in the J-lounges after an international sector.

I remember smoking rooms at the newest PEK terminal. I'd imagine it smells better in there than outside.

Also nice to see the lavatory on a NZ 767 still had the ash tray adjacent to the razor blade disposal slot.

That is disgusting.

If I were you in that anecdote I would immediately jump up and make a scene.....and somehow garner enough restraint not to thwomp that idiot over the head with a chair.

Honestly....truly disgusting and a torrid violation of the rules.

The problem with trying to "catch" people doing it is that it can't be linked to people easily. For example, even with the person who 'fessed over the phone, it's still your word against his (unfortunately), unless you can convince the person he was talking to (seize phone logs) to 'fess what he just said. Even then, he could say he made it up just to stir others around him (i.e. it was a joke, which so happened to coincide). If someone walks out of a bathroom and the next person walks in and it smells of smoke, there's no reasonable way to ascertain that someone before the last one who walked out was the culprit. And a random staffer who walks into a bathroom that smells smoke can't pinpoint who it could've been who was previously in that bathroom. So what can you do, short of installing some sort of smoke detector in the bathroom (that somehow is immune to steam).

As it is clearly illegal to smoke indoors, Qantas and Brisbane Airport Corporation could very well be taken to court for not stopping these kinds of actions. And frankly I will check more thoroughly next time for smoke and ensure that I hold QF and BAC accountable for it. And for any individual I happen to catch 'fessing up or doing the deed - I hope you have a drafted will, for I will harbour absolutely no respect for you........

I'm sorry for the tone of this post, but I am truly disgusted...
