Obtaining Gold membership without enough QF segments?

I don't have the time to read all the AAdvantage T&C, just wondering if you even need an AA flight number to get status, get the feeling that you can get elite status with the minimum miles, points, segments with a BA, IB etc as long as you enter your AAdvantage number of these flights and flown the minimum requirements with these non AA airlines.

There is a requirement in the AA T&C for minimum four AA flights - this is not however enforced. The situation was the same until 2 - 3 years ago at QF - the requirement was there but not enforced.
