Tyres burst on Air New Zealand jet as take-off aborted

Twelve tyres on a packed Air New Zealand international flight burst after a take-off was urgently aborted.
The incident prompted a full-scale emergency response at one of Japan's biggest airports, including fire engines to cool the Boeing 777-200's braking system. A runway was shut down

Flight NZ90 from Narita to Auckland had 296 passengers and 13 crew aboard when takeoff was aborted on Sunday evening (Tokyo time) after the pilots discovered a potential problem with the auto thrust control. An Air NZ spokeswoman confirmed the incident and said an investigation was underway.

In another incident, passengers on an Air NZ flight from Sydney to Auckland on Tuesday were told to practise emergency positions when the plane's flaps – which allow landing or takeoff at slower speeds – developed a problem.
The Boeing 767-300 was about to land when the pilot told passengers to prepare for an emergency landing. This was cancelled after crew partly fixed the fault.

FYI - Not overly exciting, but hadn't read anything about these incidents on here yet.

Well I’d be freaked out if the captain asked me to practice emergency positions before landing!

Yeah, that would be change of underwear time for me as well...

aborted landings are nothing special, but being told to adopt the brace position when coming in for a landing ...

There is a thread on PPRuNe about the Narita incident, from what I have read on that thread it appears unlikely that the tyres "burst",more like they deflated as designed due to the heat of the brakes.
It seems the other question may be whether the take off was aborted above V1.
(I'm only paraphrasing what has been said in a few posts on the PPRuNe thread).

Yes there is a very cool video of the B777 still in testing when they reject take-off and let the brakes over-heat such that the plugs release all the nitrogen in the tyres and deflate.

All the wheels & tyres are left to burn/melt for 5mins (part of the test) before fire crews are allowed to spray water.

Yep that's the one and probably exactly what happened on the NZ aircraft.

I hope the firies were able to approach the NZ bird before the 5 minute limit

Pretty huge repair bill (circa $US 750K mentioned on the video - and that's probably a pretty old quote based on the 777's age).

Flying aircraft really isn't cheap!
