Sounds like MOST airlines I'd say these days.

we use our 3 pieces a 1K allowance for each flight, and thank goodness they have not touched that!

Sounds just like american airlines...

Did you mean american airlines or American Airlines (AA)? This is the first I've heard of a fee for checked baggage. We have three flights coming up with AA in Sept/Oct - will we have to pay this fee or is it just the one airline at the moment? Our seats are all award seats so I'm presuming we'll be paying if we booked within the time frame - just hadn't seen anything on the AA site but might have missed it :?:

If you booked and ticketed on or before 11th May there is no fee for your first or second bag at all.

If booked and ticketed after 11th May but before June 15th, a second bag costs USD25 per trip.

If booked and ticketed on or after June 15th, a first checked bag will cost USD15 and a second checked bag costs the USD25.

However if you did book after these dates there are exceptions and I believe you will qualify for an exemption as you are travelling on an award:
The following customers will not be charged a service fee to check a bag provided the bag is within the weight allowance:

  • For the first checked bag, customers who buy a ticket before June 15, 2008
  • For the second checked bag, customers who purchased a ticket before May 12, 2008
  • Customers originating travel in the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada and traveling to an international destination beyond the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada
  • Customers originating travel outside the U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico or Canada and traveling to an international destination
  • Customers who purchase full-fare tickets in Economy Class
  • Customers who purchase Business or First Class tickets
  • Customers flying on AA codeshare flights not operated by American Airlines, American Eagle or AmericanConnection®
  • Customers traveling on government or military fares
  • Military passengers on active duty
  • AAdvantage Executive Platinum®, AAdvantage Platinum® or AAdvantage Gold® members
  • oneworld Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby members
  • Customers flying on the same reservation as an AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold member or oneworld Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby member regardless of frequent flier status or fare type (not applicable to group bookings)
  • First and Business Class MileSAAver® Awards

We booked all the AA flights in Nov 07. I can't see where it says we're exempt. The award flights were booked through Qantas, not AA. I think, to be on the safe side, we'll be prepared to pay. If we aren't asked it will be a bonus. On countdown now - 4 weeks to go :!:

If booked in Nov 07 the first 2 points tell you that you are exepmt.

v8Statesman is almost correct; the date of actual ticketing may be more important.

Again my assumtion getting the better of me. As Driver had said it was an Award seat and I noted from the profile they are a QFF member. I know how quick of the mark (atleast every one I hae done) QF are at Ticketing (and taking points and +++ form CC) after booking. SO thought the NOV-MAY safety margin was not worth mentioning. (In relation to delay from booking to ticketing)

We'll see when we fly - AA has changed our plans 3 times now, but as I said, original booking was Nov 2007 - not concerned - it was just new to me - I expect we'll be fine. It's interesting though - any sign of Australian airlines doing this? We get two checked bags each flying internationally with Qantas - this gives us plenty of shopping opportunities! Thanks for clarifying - not always the quickest cab off the rank here! ;)

I have found it often depends on haw far in advance any such booking is made.

These days, I make very few award flight bookings; the last was early this year for travel early next year. Even though I had seats selected a PNR at al; the points and
ppplus.bmp
were not charged until about six weeks after making the original booking.

Yes Virgin is implementing a fee to have checked luggage. It will be $8 to prepay checked luggage and $20 to pay for checked luggage at check-in. It has been covered in another thread.

I think Jetstar and Tiger have similar fare structures for checked luggage.

Not quite; Jetstar have a "light" fare which has no checked luggage allowance for $10 less domestic than the discount fare. With DJ, even the discount fare now has an additional charge for checked luggage.

$50 for the second bag now...

United Airlines doubles second-bag fee to $50 | Markets | Markets News | Reuters

United Airlines said on Monday it is doubling the fee to check a second bag on a domestic flight from $25 to $50 one-way.

United estimated the fee will apply to only one out of seven customers.

The fee will not apply to customers in the United First or United Business programs, those with Premier status with United or Star Alliance, or active duty military personnel traveling on orders.
