Hi,

I'm currently only in QF program. Can you view a table of miles you need for travel flight redemptions before joining?

Just wondering how many miles might need for an economy and business flight between Australia and US?

I'm not sure if I'm reading it correctly but a one-way Oz to US seems to be only 62,500 on business (whereas it's about 128,000 of QF points!). By my calculations, to buy 65,000 AA points with the offer (ie inclusive of the free miles) = USD 1,182.50.

But I'm not an AA member and have never redeemed points for flights (let alone business class flights) so I don't know:
(a) how easy (or not) it would be to get availability on QF business seats; and
(b) how much the taxes would be.

Otherwise, it would be a very tempting way to save on a business class flight - albeit a very convoluted process.

Also query whether such a redemption would earn you AA EQPs, as if you're doing an OZ - US return you could get close to meeting their AA Platinum challenge (if you get EQPs as if you actually did buy a business class return flight).

Its an Award flight so no miles or points are earned. It can be difficult to redeem more than one seat. The awards are not bookable on AA until 331 days before (355 days on QF)

Thanks. Just realised you can get as far as seeing availability on the AA booking redemption site. The availability seems quite problematic - for example, there are no business seats available for the SYD - LAX on business until one day in June. The booking engine does not allow me to go as far as to let me see the taxes payable. It's also oddly saying the QF11 flight is a 388 - not sure what that plane is, but I thought QF is either A380 or 747. Also a shame that there's a charge for transferring points, I had thought about buying the points and if I'm not able to use it for the dates I want I might sell it at cost.

Yes, Jleno, QF 11 is an A380 (A380-800 to be exact)(also referred to as an A388). There are also some 747 flights.

For J redemptions, also check availability via DFW (747 aircraft). May be better availability.

Availability shows up only as far out as 330(?) days on AA.

You don't need to buy points you cannot use . Enrol yourself in AA Advantage it's free to join. Search for the Awards you want, if you see something you want you can put it on hold for 5 days and then purchase the points to complete the booking.
BTW a "388" is an A380 ;)

Indeed he can, but base on my experience, getting 2 rewards seats with TN to/from PPT anywhere near the dates you would like to go are impossible. Best of luck though!

Just a data point Gold Member ... I recently ran a search in EF for all available dates; 2 award seats in J were returned on about 2/3 of TN flights AKL-PPT-AKL. We're going in April! :D
 
For those wanting an example of what you can do with points I have outlined what I did on the Jan bonus thread. Only time I will ever get to fly UK to Oz in first class and I only booked about 5 months ahead.

Yep we haven't seen it for a whole 31 days.

Before that??? The 50% has been. December feature for a while but not normally followed by one in the early new year or even mid yer for that matter.

Exactly - that's why I thought I'd play it safe and grab the Jan offer.......
 
So what will you all do with the 180k points some may potentially have?

i have played with syd- USA cities in J and F but most seem to show via HNL, particularly with 2 pax. Which is not desirable for me.

syd-sin, BA F for 45k one way (compared to 90k qantas) seems like a good option come march with NF, as 2 pax seems possible. Link this to an SG saver suites for comparison and you'd be well on your way to a nice long weekend!

Also are these points worthwhile on internal country flights? Eg syd-per on lax-NYC?

Last year I got LAN J redemption to SCL with no problems, finding onwards connections to MVD was harder. So you may want to consider trying separate award searches using SCL as transit point then linking for the award redemption, or even just pay cash for the connections within South America if the availability is to SCL in J.
