A random collection of observations more than anything else.

I am on a trip to the USA via Auckland. The J fares ex-AKL were hard to resist and I wanted to take advantage of the Hyatt 10000 bonus point promotion and re-qualify for Platinum at the same time - so a YUPP seemed like a good idea.

In the course of the first few days there have been a few bests I thought I might share.

BEST EVER MEAL ON A J FLIGHT: Hands down the "Roast Chicken in Rosemary Broth with Potato Gratin and Steamed Greens". Served on the LAX - AKL flight it was fantastic, the chicken was high quality and moist and the Gratin was the best I ever had anywhere. Which leads me to disagree with Simongr - who I hold in the highest regard as a fellow Apple devotee. I like Neil Perry's food and if he was in any way responsible for that meal all power to him.

BEST EVER EXIT FROM A PLANE: The AKL - LAX landed just after 6 am - through customs and on the street by 6:20 a new record for me at LAX.

SPECIAL MENTION FOR HYATT SUMMERFIELD EL SEGUNDO: The hotel has a free shuttle that takes guests any where within a 5 mile radius. Great dinner at EL Torito - a Mexican restaurant chain. Why can we not get decent Mexican food in Sydney?

BEST EVER TIME GETTING THROUGH TSA IN LAX. Last time I flew with AA it took me over an hour to get through - today 5 minutes - no xray - no invasive body search.

BEST PART OF THE ANTICIPATION OF TOMORROW'S YUPP: The transcontinental LAX-JFK in F. Never done it before because on a DONE it put you in business.

If anyone cares or is interested will post a report on the YUPP.

Looking forward to your YUPP report as I'll be doing one when I go to the States later next year.

Just have to work out the best bang for my buck as we have a few days spare in LA! At least I have lots of time to research all the possibilities.

You know - I was amazed coming through LAX immigration a couple of weeks ago, same experiences - through immigration in a world record amount of time - less than 15 mins from disembarking to street!!

And TSA was pretty good too.

Although having been through T4 TSA 3 times in the last 2 weeks, i got body-scanned once. No groping unfortunately, was actually a little disappointed that I didn't get felt up (no, not really), all I got was a radio message of "male, ok".

May I ask who has these 'cheap' J fares?

Cheers

Greg

I did not say cheap. The return fare on Qantas to the USA ex NZ was approximately $5000 which is a lot less than ex Sydney.

Well worth knowing - will have a look - thanks
