Greetings all.

This Thurs 5th May I depart with my partner on JQ to HNL. Today I received a phone call to advise me the aircraft has been 'downgraded' and we have been moved from Starclass to Economy. Compensation includes retaining on board Starclass benefits (meals, entertainment) and a $500pp credit refund and $400pp Jetstar voucher. Annoying but fair.

When I enquired how many passengers were being moved from this class, the response was about '20 Starclass passengers'. I then asked if the aircraft was being substituted for an A321 meaning there would be an additional stop. (we have west coast connections later that day). This was not able to be answered. I asked if Starclass baggage allowance still applied (our return also booked in *class) but again unable to be answered. I asked about QFF points and status credits but again no idea. Subsequently I asked the agent to have a manager call me to discuss these things before I agreed to any changes and compensation.

After no response I called back tonight and was given the same information about the downgrading of my ticket and compensation. I asked if the flight had been overbooked and mentioned my booking was made over 7 mths ago (I also mentioned my QFF Gold status for posterity). Agent said he could not help. Recognising defeat, I finally asked if I could have the new conditions/ compensation emailed to me as confirmation After waiting 10 mins he came back and informed me the 'manifest has been sent' and you have 'been left seated in Starclass'!

As an aside, I noticed a couple of days ago that this flight and its susequent same day return from HNL was showing as sold across all classes in spite showing plenty of seats in the week prior.
Any thoughts on what may be going on here? Possible substitution? The realist in me expects I was fobbed off at the end and should in all probability expect to receive an economy ticket at the airport.

Cheers and thanks.

I'm not sure if there's been anything more than overbooking going on, but your experience with the JQ call centre is fairly typical. They aren't recognised for their enormous knowledge or helpfullness!

That sounds interesting (weird interesting). To say you've been seated in starclass might be positive. Please let us know what happens.

I agree it's interesting, and await the results.

I think it has been a classic "We're overbooked" situation, and JQ panicked.

Looking at the loads, the flight is fully booked.

Expert flyer is showing 0s across all classes with the operating aircraft A332, so it looks like overbooking.

The compensation isn't too bad, but I wonder whether you will get exit or bulkhead row.

I was downgraded at Narita for my return flight to BNE a few months ago, due to an oversale.

Comp was the same as offered to u. I got starclass points/SC's for the NRT-CNS sector, and jetflex for CNS-BNE. Took starclass to NRT via OOL, in the end, minus comp and a starclass sale, the ticket cost me $150 for 200+ SC's.

In the GDS they have removed the flight altogether for Thursday  but on the JQ website they have it as Sold Out for all the fare buckets. How very strange.

I have a feeling the a/c you were originally one is going out for MX, and therefore you'll be flying a QF charter on a 767 most likely.
Less J seats and less Y seats.

JQ4 on the same day is showing as sold out. (Normally the same Aircraft)

Have the travel times changed at all for your booking?

Other than that I think it is as posted, an oversold situation.

Agree with QFCSA - the first thing that popped into my mind when I read the original post was "they're substituting a QF aircraft", which will mean a J capacity considerably below the 38 seats JQ have in Starclass. (If it's an international-configured 767 it will have 25 J seats).

Had you already selected a seat with your JQ booking? If so, would be unlikely that you'd be offloaded for overbooking.

I'd suggest you go into your booking on the JQ website and see what it is now showing.

Hmm, there is a QF6403 on SYD-HNL tomorrow. Wonder if that indicates anything......

QF283 is the normal codeshare, but 6403??

Have been unable to access through JQ website since yesterday.

QF6403 has been mentioned in despatches on this forum before:

Sorry can't post Serfty's link but this is looking like the most likely scenario. Knew I would find an answer on this forum!

I certainly will. Whatever happens it's all a bit of a win-win anyway.

P.S. Have been reading this board for a while and have always been appreciative of the collective knowledge so generously shared. Sincere thanks.

James :)

We are also on JQ3 tomorrow in Starclass.

At least, i hope we are!

Jetstar called yesterday and twice today asking that we move to a Jetflex economy seat. Compensation offered was $500 cash refund and a $400 voucher. We declined and apparently we remain allocated seats in Starclass.

Unlike James1, I can still access our booking online and the seats we chose months ago remain allocated to us. I can't do a web check-in, however.

I'm stressing a bit now because our domestic flight lands in Sydney at 1500 so it doesn't leave much time to collect our bags and hustle over to the international terminal.

As we've been allocated seats, does anyone know whether we'll be bumped if we don't check in until 1600-1630?

I'm considering changing our domestic flights to get into Sydney earlier. Any views?

Yeah, JQi doesn't have online check in.

In terms of getting there early, if it doesn't cost too much it might be useful insurance. But then being in starclass you should be able to check in pretty quickly. Sorry not a real answer, but I'm not too sure.

...
With what carrier are you flying in to SYD on?

QF flights 6xx_ are usually ferry flights for positioning. Sometimes a positioning flight with have the word "P" after it also.

I have just come back from HNL before Easter - travelled Star. JQ3/4

When we were leaving, the checkin girl SYD said something like JQ are upgrading and shortly there will no longer be any Star.Class. She also mentioned the revamped web site. The class was to be called business. I still can't interpret this. (Although Star is still available on the web site since the web upgrade)

Another point, departing HNL(20/04) there was a QANTAS flight which was leaving about 2hrs later for SYD -767 aircraft. Didn't take any notice of the flight number.
