Had a peek today for a trip from Sydney to Johannesburg next month as my partner's father is in poor health and it's time for a visit. I didn't expect much in the way of premium availability, but imagine my surprise when I discovered using the classic reward finder tool that QF hasn't released a single seat even in Y from either SYD or PER to JNB until January 2027, at which point the calendar opens right up almost completely. Seems QF has simply put a total block on classic reward tickets to South Africa for the rest of the year.

But hey, you can spend ~70,000 miles and $1000 to fly 24+ hours via Dubai in Y. 🙄

Sigh.

Sad but not surprising, unfortunately.

This might be one of those times when having status makes a big difference. If you’re a Platinum or Platinum One member, you might have some luck calling Qantas to request the release of a Classic Reward seat.

Alas, I'm mere SG, so no love there. The irony is I'm SG and not WP this year because I made the conscious decision to stop chasing it last year because the value just isn't there.

Though I suppose with the money I've saved booking elsewhere, I can just buy his ticket!

Does seem a bit odd. Even LHR and the Nth American routes still have whY seats.

There is a lot of EK F availability if you have the points!
