No News has scraped the bottom of the barrel in even stealing the head line with the same [similar] name as the thread. Desk top jurnos, unreal...

From No News...

A NEW Qantas safety video introduced by Hollywood actor John Travolta has been labeled "cringe-worthy" by the airline's flight attendants and pilots, annoyed that the actor refers to them as a "team" instead of a crew, according to The Sunday Telegraph.

Although I haven't managed to find it in the online article, I believe that the journalist may have been tipped off by the OP in the Original Thread, or possibly quoted without their permission.
The Sunday Times article quite clearly referred to a "Frequent Flyer" named Similion.
As I said I can't find an online copy, but I will scan a copy provided the paper hasn't made the recycle bin yet.

I read the article and thought it was based on AFF material as well. Its not the first time we have seen "journalism" based on lazy research methods and lacking correct credit for the source of the material published I am afraid, and I suspect it wont be the last.

It is insulting and ridiculous to suggest that a professional journalist would source material from AFF when they could have gone straight to PPrune...

I think that's a bit harsh. I believe there are several examples where AFF and AFF members have been quoted in mainstream media articles.

I think that Russ's post was very tongue in cheek from the PPrun reference (professional pilots rumour network) ;)

Can anyone spot the oxymoron in the above quotation? :!:

Well I have had the "honor"of having one of my TRs being used for a travel article on LOTFAP by nonews.I thought it funny reading the article that it only mentioned things I had done.Went back to the TR and about every 10th word was different. No longer thought it was coincidence.

What is the go with quoting from AFF by journalists? Is it proper conduct for their source to be quoted or can they basically do what they like?

I dont believe morally it is right and certainly under copyright law its not, copyright is the automatic right of the creator from the point that the first 'recorded' the work in a tangible manner. As the poster, you are the copyright owner. If the forum owner has terms and conditions regarding the transfer of copyright then it becomes the property of the forum itself.

I suspect its a case of getting away with what you can and fighting it if someone takes issue with what has happened.

Yep I've been quoted by AAP in one of their articles. Didn't really like it, and thought the journo was lazy. Journos using Twitter, Facebook, web forums etc to get stories are plain lazy.

(And here's the background: http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/travel-news/aff-and-mal-in-news-13569.html .

To be fair, the quote taken was actually a response I did make to a thread created by a journalist. But, the response I made was 2 years before I was quoted in the press! (Yep, 2 years!)

On the Frequentflyer website the members are voicing their concerns.

"I believe that the value of the Qantas Frequent Flyer scheme has been diminishing greatly over the last couple of years," said a bulletin board user calling himself Mal.

"Points deflation (ie, more points required for an award) is only one of the issues.

"Some others I can quickly come up with are the increase of the monetary contribution to an award and the excess number of frequent flyer points in the market."

Anyway, something like that would be "fair use" under copyright, but it does still show laziness by journalists.

I think if it happened to me I'd be torn between ringing my lawyer vs ringing Media Watch....

Now that's what I'd call disgraceful, and is actually highly unethical in the context of the MEAA code of ethics.

Not withstanding:

Now I won't be drawn on the efficacy of this copyright statement in respect of posts by members - it appears on the bottom of every page of the site. There's no way in hell that the extent of the use described by drron could be passed off as fair use.

Sorry, but that's taking the piss and quite frankly either you or admin should have filed a complaint with the MEAA or the Australian Press Council. They need to be taken to task when they blatantly violate copyright.

That's NOTHING!

I'm sick to death of the number of times I've been quoted in the Bible without a by-your-leave. This is even more galling when they take my comments out of Corinthians and turn "it bares all things" into "it bears all things", and then use it to justify full body scanners at airports. The Basterds!

I'm curious about this (recall you mentioning it before, but don't remember if you named the News Ltd article). Can you give some more details about this amazingly co-incidental travel report that mirrored your trip rather well? :)
