Gone are the days of free redemptions. I just redeemed points for a 1 way flight from Melbourne to Grafton, NSW. 20,000 points + $48 in other crharges. (the return would have had $79 in extra charges). $48 = $10 Ansett levy + $4 noise levy + $13 security charge + $21 in other charges!???!!!

...and don't forget the A$0.79 if you pay the A$79.00 by CC!

Bound to make them think twice. We could always whip the hat around if the $0.79 is too much of a stretch.

charges

The other $21 in additional taxes was probably the "we can rip you off so ner ner tax" qantas introduced some years ago.

Using points for a flight should include taxes in my opinion.... otherwise the value of points just decreases to such a level that you only use them for upgrades!

Don't mind paying "taxes" that they airline genuinely has to pay to the govt (eg noise taxes, Ansett Levy), but all the other "taxes" are really just "charges", such as pax based airport charges which are really just part of the cost in providing a seat to a passenger. These charges used to be part of the ticket cost, and not itemised separately, therefore were not charged for redemptions. I think that the airlines, and QF in particular should be more upfront about what the genuine taxes really are vs various levies charged by the airline and airports. (Wasn't airport security & insurance always part of the cost of running an airline, and part of the ticket price - just because they have increased since Sept 11, why have they been separated out?)

Wasn't SYD going to introduce the 'terror tax' ? (as 'insurance' for the coming 'war')
