...
From memory when I have called up airlines, very little checking is done to confirm I really am me before I have been able to make changes (such as flight times).

At least FF number/pin number and more often than not the booking reference number.

I was talking about calling an airline where I was not a FF, and only had the booking number (printed as clear as day on the itin).

Well this case clearly shows the reason for having an enduring power of attorney.

The law is the law and the way to protect yourself form the law is by putting in place things like this and also wills.

Hmmm,

Can't the Girlfriend that was travelling with him (presumabley on the same booking) phone and cancel. But that wouldn't make a news story.

Can't be critical as we do not know all the details.

While I'm not familar with UK law, there is something that protects consumers from this in Australia.

Say you are in a serious accident overseas and can't communicate - if you can't talk to your insurance company in extrodinary medical circumstances there is a level of compassion insurance companies need to provide.

I never heard of this idea that insurance companies need to provide compassion. The only real protections are called a will and a power of attoney.
